All of the following 2024 St. Emilion wines were tasted in barrel in April in Bordeaux under non-blind conditions at either the chateau, various trade groups, organizations, negociants, or with consultants. 2024 Saint Emilion Barrel Tasting Notes, Scores, Reviews, Part 1 Wines A-L…

2024 Adaugusta – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Forward, fresh, medium-bodied, and fruity, with a lean towards its base of red cherry core of fruit, the wine is enhanced by a juicy touch of citrus and cocoa in the easy-going, soft-textured finish. The wine should be easy to taste upon release. Drink from 2027-2035. 87-89 Pts

Stephanie de Bouard Angelus “With 2024, we remained true to the identity of Angelus and did not attempt to produce wines that the character of the vintage did not permit. To accomplish this, we needed to find the optimal moment to pick our grapes. In the cellars, it was imperative that during the extractions, we exercised extreme care with a light touch.”

2024 Angelus – St. Émilion Grand Cru – It requires no effort to find the bouquet of flowers in the perfume, followed by the discovery of licorice, black cherries, espresso, Valrhona chocolate, smoke, and plums on the nose. The palate is even better, showcasing an elegant display of red pit fruits. Silky and refined, the finish emphasizes purity, lift, vibrancy, and a strong sense of place, featuring a mineral-driven conclusion. The wine blends 60% Merlot, with 40% Cabernet Franc, 13.7%. Harvesting took place from September 11 to October 5. The wine is aging as follows: the Merlot is aged in 100% new, French oak, while half the Cabernet Franc is aged in new, French oak, with the other half of the Franc aging in foudres. 2024 Angelus Carillon d’ Angélus – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Chocolate-covered plums, black raspberries, espresso, black cherries, and licorice fill the perfume. Vibrant, fresh, and juicy, the fruits are lively, soft, sweet, and have a touch of crushed rocks and stones that emerge at the end of the finish. With a year or so in the bottle, you can enjoy this wine 12 to 15 years after that. The wine blends 90% Merlot, with 10% Cabernet Franc. Drink from 2027-2040. 91-93 Pts

2024 Angelus No 3 – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Floral in nature, with strawberries and minty accents, the wine is bright, fruity, and fresh, with lingering notes of raspberries and cherries in the crisp finish. The wine blends 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. This is already delicious in your glass, so do not hesitate to open a bottle on release. Drink from 2027-2033. 89-91 Pts

Edouard Vauthier Chateau Ausone “Sorting was crucial to the vintage. Selection, selection, selection, and more selection made the difference with 2024 Bordeaux. To give you an idea, we used both density sorting machines and hand sorting in the vineyards and cellars. We declassified 20% of the harvest from some parcels. With more problematic plots, we declassified as much as 80% of what we picked.”

2024 Ausone – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Intensely floral in its perfume, you also experience oceanic influences, mint, spice, smoke, licorice, black raspberries, cherries, and plums. Medium-bodied, elegant, fresh, and juicy, the marine influence from the limestone terroir is notably strong this year, enhancing the vibrancy, length, lift, and complexity of the wine. For Ausone, you will be able to enjoy this early, with only a modicum of aging. The wine blends 65% Cabernet Franc with 35% Merlot.13.67% ABV, 3.54 pH. Harvesting took place September 30 – October 5. 2024 Ausone Chapelle d’Ausone – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Flowers, spearmint, tobacco, black cherries, and plums pop in the aromatic perfume. On the palate, the wine is vibrant, elegant, fresh, and juicy; there is a refreshing touch of citrus and mint accompanying the bright cherries, salty plums, and spices in the vibrant finish. The wine blends 85% Cabernet Franc, with 15% Merlot. Drink from 2028-2045. 91-93 Pts

2024 Badette – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Flowers, black cherries, licorice, cocoa, and espresso already show in the perfume. With good color, the wine is built around its core of juicy, fruity, round-textured black cherries, chocolate, and plums. Drink from 2028-2040. 91-93 Pts

2024 Balestard La Tonnelle – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Licorice, cocoa, espresso, flowers, and plums are displayed in the perfume. The wine is medium-bodied, soft, and round, quickly focusing you on its core of sweet, ripe, vibrant, creamy, deep, red pit fruits, and chocolate. The wine blends 56% Merlot, 27% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 17% Cabernet Franc. Drink from 2028-2040. 91-93 Pts

2024 Barde Haut – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Fresh, floral, and fruity, the wine is medium-bodied and already showing its waves of sweet, ripe, vibrant, deep red fruits, with a touch of cocoa to round everything out. There is lift, and really fine energy here from start to finish. The wine blends 80% Merlot with 20% Cabernet Franc. 13% ABV. Drink from 2027-2039. 92-94 Pts

Julien Barthe Chateau Beau-Sejour Becot “Controlling outbreaks of mildew was one of the keys to our vintage this year. Additionally, waiting as long as possible for ripeness in the Merlot was another key factor this year. In fact, we did not finish picking Merlot until October 3, setting a record for the latest date in the estate’s history to finish harvesting Merlot.”

2024 Beau-Sejour Becot – St. Émilion Grand Cru – The intensity, length, and purity are impossible to ignore this year. The wine offers strong floral characteristics coupled with sweet, ripe red cherries, licorice, black raspberries, and a hint of cocoa. It is silky, elegant, long, and refined. The fruit is incredibly soft, pure, and mineral-driven, providing touches of salt and spice that enhance the wine’s sapidity. wine is aged in 50% new, French oak barrels, along with foudres, and amphora. The wine blends 78% Merlot, with 22% Cabernet Franc. 13%, ABV, 3.5 pH. The harvest took place, September 25 – October 4. Drink from 2029-2052. 94-96 Pts

2024 Beausejour – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Flowers, cigar wrappers, spice box, cherries, and red plums pop in the aromatic profile. Vibrant, mineral-driven, marine-influenced, and floral, with a touch of citrus, it is easy to see all the complexities here. The wine is medium-bodied, sweet, vibrant, soft, and refined, allowing it to make its entrance gracefully. The finish, touched by its limestone terroir, is complemented by a refreshing splash of mint on the backend. The key to the wine’s success clearly lies in the selection from the vineyard and in the cellars. The wine blends 72% Merlot with 28% Cabernet Franc, 13% ABV, 3.36 pH. Yields were quite low this year at only 28 hectoliters per hectare. This is the first vintage produced in their new cellars. 2024 Croix de Beausejour – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Leafy herbs, tobacco, flowers, and cherries propel the nose. The medium-bodied wine is forward, bright, and fresh, with a touch of salt adding complexity to the savory, red berry finish. This should be a pleasure to enjoy on release. Edouard Moueix Chateau Belair-Monange ”With the 2024 Bordeaux climatic conditions, we needed nerves of steel as we waited for the grapes to ripen. To produce the best wines possible, we had to be extremely selective in the vintage. To give you an idea, in Pomerol, we completely declassified two vineyards, Chateau Hosanna and Chateau La Grave Pomerol. We did not release any wine this year.”

2024 Belair-Monange – St. Émilion – The nose is quite floral, with notes of black cherries, licorice, espresso, crushed stones, and plums shaping the perfume. The palate is even better, featuring layers of fresh, soft, elegant, ripe red fruits that exhibit refined textures, energy, purity, and vibrance both on the palate and in the aromatic finish. The wine is produced from 98% Merlot, with 2% Cabernet Franc. Drink from 2029-2055. 94-96 Pts

2024 Bellefont-Belcier – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Flowers, peppery spice, licorice, espresso, and cherries create the perfume. The wine is medium-bodied, fresh, supple, and soft, with layers of sweet, salty cherries, cocoa, and mint notes in the finish and a refreshing quality. 2024 Bellevue St. Émilion Grand Cru – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Dried flowers, lilacs, cherries, red plums, strawberry, and licorice show with ease in the nose. Fresh, vibrant, silky, and refined, the fruits are sweet, long, and seductive, offering a nice sense of purity on the medium-bodied palate, and in the finish. 2024 Berliquet – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Quite floral and fruity in the perfume, the wine displays its classic, limestone character that allows the refined cherries and red fruits to shine. Elegant, vibrant, and with soft, polished textures, the wine finishes with its silky, stylings, and sense of purity to the fruits on the palate and in the minty, tobacco-tinted finish. The wine blends 59% Merlot, with 40% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Malbec. 13.5% ABV. Drink from 2028-2044. 92-94 Pts

2024 Boutisse – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Medium-bodied, fresh, juicy, and fruity, the wine is firm, vibrant, and mineral-driven, so you taste and feel the effect of the limestone terroir on the red cherries and red plums, which adds a spice and salty edge on the palate and in the finish. The wine blends 92% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 3% Carmenere, and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink from 2028-2040. 90-92 Pts

2024 Cadet Bon – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Flowers, mint, licorice, tobacco, and plummy nuances are on display in the nose. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied as well as sweet, juicy, and fresh, with supple, creamy-textures, and a vibrant, black cherry, and mint-filled finish. A portion of the Cabernet Franc was whole bunch fermented. The wine blends 60% Merlot, with 40% Cabernet Franc. Drink from 2027-2039. 90-92 Pts

2024 Candale – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Medium- bodied, fresh, fruity, and floral, it takes only a sniff, and sip to find all the sweet, black raspberries, licorice, and cocoa on the mid-palate, and in the finish. This should offer a lot of charm on release, and for more than a decade after that. The wine blends 65% Merlot with 35% Cabernet Franc. Drink from 2027-2038 90-92 Pts

Nicolas Audebert Chateau Canon “2024 was our first vintage certified organic. Even with that in mind, in this challenging year, we produced 44 hectoliters per hectare. This means that with this vintage, you are tasting the true vineyard of Chateau Canon, as we are using the majority of the production.”

2024 Canon – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Soft, polished, fresh, floral, and silky, the wine is sweet with a classic, elegant style. You find depth, purity, and refinement in its character, which comes from a wealth of raspberries, red plums, strawberries, and cherries. There is vibrancy and length, and as I mentioned earlier, most importantly, what makes this exceptional is the purity of the fruits in the fresh, mineral-driven finish, which is quite an accomplishment for the vintage. 2024 Canon Croix Canon – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Flowers, mint, cherries, and plums open the wine in the perfume. Juicy, crisp, fresh, minty, and refreshing, this elegant, lifted wine will be quite charming to open on release. The wine blends 59% Cabernet Franc, with 41% Merlot. Drink from 2027-2040. 90-92 Pts

Stephan von Neipperg Canon La Gaffeliere “During the 2024 Bordeaux growing season, we did not plow or conduct any green harvesting before the harvest. This helped stave off botrytis. Selection in the vineyards was another key factor this year. In fact, we declassified entire parcels that were normally used for the Grand Vin. Due to the thin skins of the grapes, we took care with a slow and careful approach extractions.”

2024 Canon la Gaffeliere – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Flowers, strawberries, chocolate, black cherries, tobacco, and mint leaves compose the perfume. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, soft-textured, supple, elegant, fresh, and pure. The red fruits are refined, vibrant, and lifted, displaying freshness, length, and complexity in the finish. The wine blends 43% Cabernet Franc, 43% Merlot, and 14% Cabernet Sauvignon. 13% ABV. The harvest took place from September 25 – October 5. Drink from 2028-2050. 93-95 Pts

2024 Cap de Mourlin – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Flowers, licorice, espresso, and black plums show with ease on the palate and perfume. Medium-bodied, round, soft, fruity, and forward, the wine leaves you with sweet, creamy, dark fruits, and just a hint of chocolate. This will be perfect to enjoy on release. 2024 Chauvin – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Soft, fresh, and fruity, the wine is round, bright, and expressive in the nose, and on the palate. You can enjoy this charming, medium-bodied, vibrant wine on release. The wine is a blend of 70% Merlot, and 30% Cabernet Franc. Drink from 2027-2038. 91-91 Pts

Pierre Olivier Clouet Chateau Cheval Blanc “The length of the flowering (6 weeks in total), setting a record for the time needed for flowering, was key to the vintage. We split the flowering into two cycles: Part 1 was filled with botrytis. We allowed the initial flowering to remain, even developing rot. The density bath during sorting was one of the keys to the vintage. It enabled us to perform strict sorting to remove all the botrytis-infected berries. Each bath was unique in its sorting ability, which reduced yields but helped us find the best fruits. By the end of the day, 2024 allowed us to produce a wine from all 37 parcels, with low, effective yields of close to 20 hectoliters per hectare—bleeding of the vats and chaptalization for the Merlot.”

2024 Cheval Blanc – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Black raspberries, plums, flowers, espresso, citrus, and hints of chocolate fill the perfume. On the palate, the wine is fresh, long, clean, and intense. It exhibits lift and vibrancy, along with intensity and purity. This is a classic, firm, and fresh vintage for Cheval Blanc that is long, vibrant, and provides tension, length, and purity from beginning to end. The key to this year’s vintage was the willingness to make strict selections, as well as allowing grapes from 37 parcels into the blend, ensuring a true representation of the vineyard. As you can see, this is one of the stars of the vintage. The wine is made from 48% Cabernet Franc, 46% Merlot, and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. 12.8% ABV, 3.61 pH. The harvest began September 18 for the Merlot, finishing their Cabernet Franc on October 3. Drink from 2030-2055. 95-97 Pts

2024 Cheval Blanc Le Petit Cheval – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Flowers, truffle, cocoa, cherries, plums, and chocolate fill the perfume. Fresh and vigorous, the wine is firm with sweetness, as well as vibrancy and juiciness in the mid-palate. In the finish, the fruits linger with their plum and cherry nuances. You can enjoy this on release and for the following two decades after that. The wine blends 72% Merlot, with 28% Cabernet Franc. The wine is aged in 1 year old barrels from Cheval Blanc. 2024 Clos Badon Thunevin – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Black raspberries, licorice, flowers, and cocoa are easy to find in the nose, and on the palate. Crisp, bright, and chewy, the fruits are lifted, and bright on the palate, as well as in the red berry finish. Drink from 2027-2038. 90-92 Pts

2024 Clos Dubreuil – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Black raspberries topped with chocolate and cherries form the core of this wine. Medium-bodied, soft, polished, and light on its feet, it can be enjoyed early for its sweet cherries, espresso, cocoa, and plums upon release, or aged for a decade or more. Matthieu Cuvelier Clos Fourtet “Being willing to take risks and waiting for ripeness before harvesting, along with strict selections, were the keys to our success in 2024. At the end of the day, what we are pleased about with this vintage is that it is not a year where the climate defines the wine. 2024 Bordeaux is a vintage that expresses our true identity through our limestone terroir.”

2024 Clos Fourtet – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Black cherries, flowers, plums, and sea salt enhance the aromatic profile. On the palate, the wine is elegant, refined, energetic, and bright. There is a noticeable tension, accompanied by fresh red fruits influenced by limestone soils, providing a strong sense of marine-influenced berries in the mid-palate and finish. The wine blends 84% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% ABV, 3.43 pH. The harvest took place, September 25 – October 11. Drink from 2029-2048. 93-95 Pts

2024 Clos Fourtet La Closerie de Fourtet – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Soft, elegant, fresh, medium-bodied, cherry, and plum-filled wine with light touches of chocolate, with just a hint of spearmint in the finish. This will be easy to enjoy in a bistro or cafe, as it is going to be delicious on release. The wine was made from blending 80% Merlot, with 20% Cabernet Franc. The wine comes from a parcel selection. 2024 Clos La Gaffeliere – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Flowers, and plums define the wine in the perfume, and on the medium-bodied palate, finishing with light, bright fresh, black cherries, licorice, and a touch of cocoa in the mid palate, and in the mineral-tinted finish. The wine blends 90% Merlot with 10% Cabernet Franc. Since 2014, Clos La Gaffeliere has been a unique wine from a parcel selection and not the second wine of La Gaffeliere. 2024 Clos Saint Julien – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Flowers, with ocean breezes, coupled with strawberries, cherries, and red plums are all over the place here. Fresh, vibrant, and salty, with chocolate, licorice, and a touch of espresso, and spearmint come along with the bright red berries on the palate, and in the finish. 2024 Clos Saint-Vincent – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Flowers, cherries, and espresso show a lot of charm in this medium-bodied, forward, fruity, easy-to-like, open charmer that is perfect for early-drinking pleasure. 2024 Clos St. Martin – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Flowers, cherries, licorice, and spicy plums are effortlessly present in the perfume. Silky, lush, and fresh, with a creamy mid-palate, the wine exudes charm and elegance through its layers of ripe, sweet plums and cherries. 2024 Clos de Sarpe – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Vibrant, crisp, fresh, juicy, and salty fruits leaning towards the red fruit side of the style range provide one of the best examples of limestone terroir. 2024 Couvent des Jacobins – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Espresso, licorice, cocoa, and plums fill the nose and palate of this round, soft, forward, fruity, medium-bodied wine. The finish, with its chocolate cherry and mint character, promises to make this an easy wine to enjoy on the young side. The wine blends 84% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot. 2024 Croix de Labrie – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Bright, juicy, and creamy on the medium-bodied palate, the wine is loaded with freshness, licorice, sweet, red cherries, and plums with a marine-influenced, salty note in the finish. The wine is produced and bottled with extremely low levels of sulfur. You can enjoy this young, or age it for more complexity, The wine blends 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Cabernet Franc. 2024 Croix de Labrie Chapelle de Labrie – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Licorice, black cherries, espresso, and smoke fill the essence of the wine. Round, fleshy, and almost creamy on the medium-bodied palate, with salty plums in the mid-palate and in the finish, the wine will deliver everything it has on release. 2024 Croix de Labrie Stella Solare – Bordeaux – White peach, flowers, green apples, and yellow citrus create the complex aromatics. Lively, elegant, and vibrant, the fruit has a gorgeous racy energy that makes sure the finish does not quit. The wine blends 60% Semillon, 20% Sauvignon Gris, and 20% Sauvignon Blanc. 2024 Dassault – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Black cherries, licorice, and flowers work well here in the nose and on the palate. Fresh, lively, medium-bodied, and vibrant, the fruits are soft, sweet, and round, with juiciness and energy, with a refreshing touch of mint in the finish. 2024 Faugeres – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Chocolate, black cherries, licorice, espresso, and flowers create the perfume. On the palate, the wine is soft, vibrant, round, and supple, with plums and cocoa that resonate from the mid-palate through to the finish. Frederic Faye Chateau Figeac “Patience, patience, and more patience were required while waiting for the best maturity we could find. From there, there was a rigorous selection in the vineyards and again in the cellars. The end result is that we produced less than half of our normal crop, helping us to create the best wine possible in this vintage.”

2024 Figeac – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Pungent notes of cigar box, tobacco, flowers, truffles, spices, cherries, licorice, currants, and plums fill the perfume. On the palate, the wine is elegant, fresh, spicy, and vibrant. The fruits are vivacious, crisp, and juicy, with a salty edge and a sprig of mint on the back end of the finish. This modern, classically styled wine can be enjoyed after just a few years in the bottle or aged for 2-3 decades with ease. Clearly, this is one of the stars of the vintage. 2024 Jean Faure – St. Émilion Grand Cru – Very floral in nature, from there you find the cherries, black raspberries, and a touch of spice, in the nose, and on the mineral-driven, vibrant, juicy palate, with a refreshing touch of mint that springs into the finish.
