2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vintage and Harvest Report

The 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines come from a vintage impacted by drought, heat, and hailstorms. It was also an early harvest, with some growers picking grapes two weeks ahead of schedule. So, what does all that mean? Expect low yields, which means less wine available. Results will vary, with some producers making excellent wines while others struggle to produce their best.

The rainy winter helped refill water tables, aiding growers through the drought. Budbreak appeared near the end of March, just before another frost hit. Hail struck the vineyards in early June and again later that month. Veraison began by mid-July under very warm, hot, and dry conditions, averaging 39°C, 102°F! The story had two sides—some much-needed rain fell, providing vital nourishment to the vines. However, the mid-August rains brought another destructive hailstorm.

Because the harvest was early, white wine grapes started as early as August 17, with red grapes harvested just one week later. Alcohol levels were kept in check, but producers adapted their approach based on their vines and vision, resulting in a diverse range of wines and styles. Overall, 2022 is a better vintage than 2021. Many excellent wines are produced, with some producers creating truly special bottles worth your attention.

Hail attacked the vines fiercely again on August 14 and 15, destroying a large area of vines. This is why many producers couldn’t produce their top cuvées. On the bright side, the remaining juice often used in the Cuvees has been blended into the traditional wines, adding a bit more character, and complexity. There are some very nice wines, check out the notes ad reviews.
