2023 Pessac Leognan and Graves is a bit stronger for white wines this year at many estates. But that doesn’t mean consumers cannot find superb red wines. As you can see below, there are several, stylish, character-filled gems from the 2023 Bordeaux vintage that will offer a lot of charm, and even better, early-drinking pleasure!

All of the following 2023 Pessac Leognan and Graves wines were tasted in my home office in early 2026 in non-blind conditions. The only major wines we were not able to taste yet, Haut Brion and La Mission Haut Brion will be tasted and reported on in the near future.

2023 Bonnat – Graves – Sweet, bright red fruits, with tobacco and earth, start the wine off. Medium-bodied, forward, fresh, fruity, and soft, the finish is all about its raspberries and cherries. This will be ready to go on release. Drink from 2027-2033. 88 Pts
2023 Brondelle – Graves – Medium-bodied, with a strong herbaceous edge to the bright, red fruits, the wine leaves you with a vibrant, though, quite light finish. This is going to be at its best for near-term drinking. Drink from 2026-2030. 84 Pts
2023 Cantelys Blanc – Pessac-Léognan – Pineapple, white peach, honeysuckle, lemons, and mango fill the perfume. On the palate, the wine is sweet and creamy, with a touch of almonds that comes along with the juicy yellow citrus in the finish. Drink from 2025-2030. 91 Pts
2023 Cantelys Rouge – Pessac-Léognan – Tobacco, flowers, menthol, and cherries pop in the nose, and on the fresh, medium-bodied, soft, fresh, palate. The wine finishes with sweet, soft-textured, red fruits with a touch of peppery, tobacco leaf in the endnote. Drink from 2026-2036. 90 Pts
2023 Carbonnieux – Pessac-Léognan – Black cherries, raspberries, strawberries, flowers, and a nice hint of tobacco create the perfume. The medium-bodied palate is soft, polished, and fresh, finishing with chocolate-covered cherries, strawberries and a touch of mint on the fruity, backend. 2023 Carbonnieux Blanc – Pessac-Léognan – Granny Smith apples, peppery citrus, and lemon rind notes are there with just a swirl or two in the perfume. 2023 ChateauOlivier Blanc – Pessac-Léognan – Even better in the bottle than it was during the aging process, this is crispy, juicy, and fresh. The citrus is a blend of vibrant, yellow fruits and green apples with a delicate touch of orange rind in the nose and on the palate from start to finish. 2023 ChateauOlivier Rouge – Pessac-Léognan – Medium-bodied, floral oriented wine with loads of ripe black cherries stained with cherries and licorice in the perfume. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, elegant, soft, and approachable, with freshness and vibrancy from start to finish. The wine blends 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot. 2023 Clos Floridène – Graves – Flowers, red berries, and a touch of smoky, black pepper greet your nose. On the medium-bodied plate, the wine is fresh, and zesty, with a sweet, and savory strawberry and red plum finish. 2023 Clos Marsalette – Pessac-Léognan – Mint, cigar box, bright red fruits and a hint of blood orange show up in the perfume with little effort. On the palate, the wine is even better. 2023 Clos Marsalette Blanc – Pessac-Léognan – A faint touch of vanilla, waxy lemons, flowers, ginger, and green apple scents pop in the nose. The palate is fruity, and most importantly, fresh, with a nice shot of sweet citrus, more of that ginger and a dab of honey that comes in at the back of the finish. 2023 Couhins – Pessac-Léognan – Bright red fruits, orange rind, flowers, tobacco and espresso form the character here. The medium-bodied palate is forward, round, and fresh, with black cherries, peppery spice, dark chocolate, and espresso from the mid-palate, through to the savory-edged, mildly chewy, spicy finish. 2023 Couhins Blanc – Pessac-Léognan – Honeysuckle, lemon wax, pomelo, and white flowers are easy to spot in the nose, and on the crisp, bright, citrus and pineapple-filled palate, leaving you with a fresh and refreshing finish. 2023 Couhins Lurton – Pessac-Léognan – With a bit more Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend than usual, the wine opens with a mild note of reduction, so allow it some decanting and swirling so you can find the flowers, chocolate, black raspberries, and black cherries in the nose. I like it more on the palate with its layers of creamy-textured red fruits and freshness. This should be delicious to taste on release, and get even better with a few years in the bottle. 2023 Domaine de Chevalier – Pessac-Léognan – Smoky black cherries, cigar wrappers, barbecue smoke, cedar, and smoked mint aromatics create the perfume. On the palate, the wine is fresh, full of finesse, smoky, elegant and complex. The finish is like eating peppery currants topped with Cuban cigar wrappers. Long, spicy, and intense, this is a vintage that will benefit from at least a few years of aging. The wine blends 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc. 2023 Domaine de Chevalier L’Esprit de Chevalier Rouge – Pessac-Léognan – Flowers, tobacco, and red fruits are all over the place in the perfume. The palate already shows off its refined, soft, silky, red berries, with the perfect hint of cocoa in the nose medium-bodied palate. The finish is soft, elegant, and poised. The bouquet bursts with a lively display of flowers, lemons, white peach, Granny Smith apples, vanilla, almonds, and a hint of pineapple, all blending into a rich aroma. The palate is lively, vibrant, and fresh, showcasing its vivid layers of sweet, juicy, creamy, and pure fruits, leaving you with a perfect touch of crushed stones and marine hints that make you want to take another sniff, swirl, and sip. 2023 Haut Bailly – Pessac-Léognan – Flowers, blackberries, camphor, black raspberries, blackberries, cherries and smoke aromatics are all over the place. On the palate, the wine offers vibrancy paired with elegant, firm tannins, and fabulous levels of purity in the fruits. The length and expansiveness is impossible to ignore. The silky, refined finish leaves you with black raspberries, and black cherries coupled with , with a refreshing touch of mint in the endnote that makes you want to take another sip. 2023 Les Carmes HautBrion – Pessac-Léognan – With a deep, garnet hue, the wine displays a perfume packed with blackberries, blueberries, cigar box, sea salt, flowers, blueberries, tar, herbs, espresso and spices. On the palate, the wine is rich, full-bodied, supple, and deep. There is intensity, purity, length, and vibrancy. The wine is rich, and concentrated, and while it can be approached early, it has all the right stuff to age for decades. While the finish is mouthcoating, its also elegant, leaving you with layers of crushed stones, a wealth of ripe, sweet, dark fruits, with a touch of salty chocolate and refreshing mint in the finish.
