Chateau La Croix St. Georges History, Overview

Located on the Pomerol plateau, the vineyards of Chateau La Croix St. Georges are planted next to some very famous neighbors. In fact, Chateau La Croix St. Georges is only one row of vines away from the famous vineyards of Le Pin and they are very close to Vieux Château Certan and Chateau Petit Village as well.

Chateau La Croix St. Georges was purchased by the Janoueix family during the depression in 1932.

However, the modern era of Chateau La Croix St. Georges begins in 1999, when the young, Jean Philippe Janoueix began managing the Right Bank estate.

One of the first tasks for Janoueix was to build a proper wine-making facility. Prior to 1999, the wines were produced at Chateau La Croix, another property, located just down the street.

Chateau La Croix St. Georges Vineyards, Terroir, Grapes, Winemaking

The 4.2 hectare Pomerol vineyard of Chateau La Croix St. Georges is planted to 91% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc. On average, the vines are 38 years of age. The vines are planted to varying degrees of density. with the Merlot at 6,666 vines per hectare and the Cabernet Franc at a very high 12,000 plants per hectare.

In some parts of the vineyard, with their newer plantings, the vineyard is planted to 12,000 vines per hectare, the most of any Pomerol estate. The terroir is clay and gravel soils.

To produce the wine of Chateau La Croix St. Georges, vinification takes place in four, open-top, wooden, 70 hectoliter, fermentation vats. Everything is done by hand at La Croix Saint Georges. Malolactic fermentation is performed in barrels.

The wines are aged in 100% new, French oak barrels for 16 to 20 months. Several of the barrels have a unique cigar shape, that the owner, Jean Philippe Janoueix prefers.

The cigar-shaped barrels allow for more contact with the lees and wood. This gives the wines of Chateau La Croix St. Georges an oaky component. So oak averse tasters might not be fans of the wine. While the wines here can lack consistency, this is an estate to watch, as they have a lot of potential to produce some very good wine.

The cellar of La Croix St. Georges has a unique design featuring a sculpture, representing St. Georges fighting on horseback to remind people that this chateau previously belonged to the Chivalrous order of the Hospitalliers of Saint-Jean of Jerusalem.

The best vintages of Chateau La Croix St. Georges are: 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2012, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2006, 2005, 2001 and 2000.

Chateau La Croix St. Georges is currently run by Jean-Philippe Janoueix who is in charge of several other Bordeaux wine estates in St. Emilion and Bordeaux.

Character and Style of Chateau La Croix Saint Georges

Chateau La Croix Saint Georges is a flashy, fleshy style of Pomerol. It’s ripe, flamboyant, and expressive. The wine needs time to allow the oak to integrate. Stylistically, this exciting Bordeaux wine cannot be compared to its closest neighbor, Le Pin. But they share the same terroir. They are only one row of vines apart.

When to Drink Chateau La Croix Saint Georges, Anticipated Maturity, Decanting Time

Chateau La Croix Saint Georges needs to age in the cellar before it begins to show its true character. La Croix Saint Georges needs at least 6-9 aging in good vintages until it is ready to be enjoyed.

Young vintages can be decanted for 2 hours or more. This allows the wine to soften and open its perfume. Older vintages might need very little decanting, just enough to remove the sediment. Chateau La Croix Saint Georges offers its best drinking and should reach peak maturity between 8-25 years of age after the vintage.

Serving Chateau La Croix St. Georges with Wine, Food, Pairing Tips

Chateau La Croix St. Georges is best served at 15.5 degrees Celsius, 60 degrees Fahrenheit. The cool, almost cellar temperature gives the wine more freshness and lift.

Chateau La Croix St. Georges is best paired with all types of classic meat dishes, veal, pork, beef, lamb, duck, game, roast chicken, roasted, braised, and grilled dishes. Chateau La Croix St. Georges is also good with Asian dishes, hearty fish courses like tuna, mushrooms, and pasta.

Jean Philippe Janoueix owns several wines from vineyards in the Right Bank including Chateau La Confession in St. Emilion, Sacre Coeur in Pomerol, Croix Mouton, and 20 Mille as well as Cap St. George from St. Georges St. Emilion.

Dark garnet in color, the wine is plush, round and polished. The black plums, licorice, smoke, tobacco and dark chocolate on the nose and palate get your attention. Richly textured with a long blast of black cherry, plum and oak on the palate and in the finish. Croix St. Georges offers licorice, coffee, vanilla, plums, blackberry, blueberry and spice in the nose. Full bodied and concentrated with layers of sweet, ripe, fruit, this is not a wine for the oak averse. There is a lot of oak in the nose and mouth. With luck, much of the oak will dissipate in time. But I would not bet the farm on it.

This is my favorite vintage of La Croix St. Georges for current consumption.

This sexy wine is already showing well. With a perfume filled with black raspberry, cherry liqueur and mocha, this round, fleshy and flashyPomerol ends with a velvety finish filled with ripe dark berry and supple black cherries. This is my favorite vintage of La Croix St. Georges for current consumption.

Great perfume with raspberry, cherry liqueur notes and a velvety finish. I'd drink this over the next 10-15 years.

Licorice, coffee bean, coconut, black cherry and an intriguing scent of menthol were the first things that caught your attention. On the palate, the wine is full bodied, lush, round and a little oaky, finishing in a flashy display of black cherries. This is showing very nice today.

Coffee bean, licorice, coconut, black cherry, earth and chocolate scents open to a soft, round, fully accessible, lush Pomerol wine that is ready to drink now. However, there is no hurry to drink it as the fruit is still fresh.

La Croix St. Georges starts with fresh plums, chocolate, oak, licorice and spice aromas. The wine is concentrated, fleshy and ripe with jammy plums, blackberries and a hint of oak. This bottle was a better tasting experience than the last bottle I had. This is a good sign as it should develop more complexity when the oak melds further into the wine.

This kicks off with an exotic perfume filled with orange peel, floral, plum, toast and vanilla aromas. The opulent wine offers a long black raspberry and licorice tinged, velvety finish. A few more years should help better integrate the oak in the wine as well.

This fabulous Pomerol has aromatics of earthy plums, dark berries, espresso and a melagne spices and blackberries. Full bodied and concentrated, this opulently textured wine offers layers of dark fruit, sweet licorice, plums and coffee beans in the lusty finish. You can drink this now, but a few more years will better integrate this Bordeaux wine

Opulent, flamboyant nose with blackberry, spice, earth, vanilla and red fruit liqueur notes stands out in a crowd. But the palate is the best part as it's bathed in a silk infused melange of concentrated rich, ripe, deep fruit. Very sexy wine in a semi flashy style.

This is ready for current consumption. Chocolate covered plums, dark cherries and mocha kick off the perfume. The wine finishes with a velvety display of ripe black fruit. If you have this wine in your cellar, there is no reason to wait to enjoy its charms. While tasty today, I doubt it will improve much from here.
