Chateau La Conseillante History, Overview

Chateau La Conseillante is one of the older Pomerol properties in the entire appellation. It has a history that dates all way back to the middle of the 18th century. At the time of the estates creation, Madame Catherine Conseillan was in charge of managing the Bordeaux vineyard and estate. It was from the Conseillan family that the property found its name.

Wine was being produced and marketed by what we now know of as La Conseillante by 1756, making the property one of the first estates in Pomerol. On the passing of Madame Conseillan, the estate passed to the Despoujal family. The Nicolas family bought Chateau La Conseillante in 1871 from the Leperche family.

The Nicolas family were well established in Bordeaux as they already owned a thriving Bordeaux l negociant company, Nicolas Freres. The company was located in Libourne, which is only a stones throw from Pomerol.

The Nicolas family have remained the owners of Chateau La Conseillante through today. Since 1970, Chateau La Conseillante has been managed by two different branches of the family owners. Today Jean Valmy Nicolas, Bertrand Nicolas and Marie France are on top of things at La Conseillante.

Together, they are the 4th and 5th generations of the Nicolas family to run Chateau La Conseillante. Currently, many of the day to day responsibilities for Chateau La Conseillante are handled by Jean Valmy Nicolas.

Chateau La Conseillante is a stunning looking Bordeaux wine bottle. Due to its unique, trademark, bright purple colored capsule, a bottle of Chateau La Conseillante is easy to see in a cellar. The purple color was chosen to represent the vibrant hue of the wine and to highlight the unique, often present aromas of violets in the perfume.

The wine label of the Nicolas family pictures a shield along with a silver border that surrounding the letter “N”. The original design for the label of Chateau La Conseillante was created in 1871, the same year the family purchased the estate.

In 1971, Chateau La Conseillante was completely renovated and modernized with the addition of temperature controlled, stainless steel tanks. There were among the first of their kind in the Pomerol appellation. Until the 2000 vintage, the family members who owned Chateau La Conseillante were responsible for the vineyards and the wine-making.

This changed the following year with the 2001 vintage when the estate hired the young, hard working and talented, Jean-Michel Laporte. One of the first major changes that took place at that time was to lower their yields, which clearly helped with the consistency and with the level of quality in their wines.

Jean Michel Laporte was placed in charge of Chateau La Conseillante in 2003. Michel Rolland was brought in as their consultant in 2013. Jean-Michel Laporte departed La Conseillante in 2015 and was replaced by Marielle Cazaux, the former director of neighboring Chateau Petit Village.

Chateau La Conseillante Vineyards, Terroir, Grapes, Winemaking

The vineyard of La Conseillante is planted to 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Over time Chateau La Conseillante plans to increase the percentage of Cabernet Franc in their vineyards with the objective of having between 25% and 30% Cabernet Franc planted.

While the estate previously had a percentage of Malbec in the vineyards, those vines have since been removed. Today, at La Conseillante, they also continue slowing increasing the percentage of their vines that are farmed using organic techniques.

The 12.3 hectare Pomerol vineyards of Chateau La Conseillante remained essentially unchanged since the early 1700’s until they added a .3 hectare parcel in the La Gravette vineyard in 2014. Located on the eastern tip of the Pomerol plateau, Chateau La Conseillante is only a stones throw from Chateau LEvangile, not far from Chateau Cheval Blanc and Petit Village.

The vineyard is planted to a vine density of close to 6,000 vines per hectare for the time being. It is the goal of Chateau La Conseillante to increase the vine density over time to 7,500 vines per hectare. The young vines are now planted at the higher densities of 7,500 vines per hectare. The vineyard is basically in one parcel, which is unusual for the Pomerol appellation.

By 2013, only 10% of La Conseillante was planted at the higher level of density. The goal of the estate is for the entire vineyard to reach 7,500 vines per hectare by 2040. On average, the vines are 35 years of age. But La Conseillante has old vines, some of which date back to the year after the devastating frost in 1957.

The Right Bank vineyards are divided into 18 separate parcels in a single block and occupy a pattern that looks a bit like a windy snake or the letter S. Interestingly, close to 30% of Chateau La Conseillante is located in St. Emilion, close to the gravel and sandy terroir of Chateau Cheval Blanc. Much of their Cabernet Franc is planted here.

The terroir is gray clay and red clay with deposits of iron, gravel and sand in their soil. They also have large deposits of blue clay in their terroir as well. Depending on where you are in the vineyards of La Conseillante, you will encounter soils with a deeper concentration of clay, or terroir with more gravel and some sand.

Most of their Cabernet Franc is planted in the gravel and sand soils, while the Merlot is planted in the clay dominated soil.

2012 La Conseillante Cellars 300x199 Chateau La Conseillante Pomerol Bordeaux Wine, Complete Guide

Chateau La Conseillante completed a massive renovation to their entire wine making facilities just in time for the 2012 vintage. In their unique, circular shaped, winery, they added 22 new, aerial, concrete tanks and an additional underground, concrete vat. They retained three, small, open, stainless steel tanks

This allows for true precision vinification on a parcel by parcel basis for the estate’s 18 parcels. 18 of the vats will be used for vinification. 4 vats are used only for blending and holding the wine. In addition, there is a new grape reception center which includes multiple sorting tables and de-stalking machines.

At La Conseillante, with the new cellars and stainless steel vats, they now vinify on a parcel by parcel basis, which allows for much more precision. In fact, Chateau La Conseillante was the first producer in Pomerol and St. Emilion to install stainless steel, temperature controlled vats. The press wine is aged separately.

Malolactic fermentation takes place in tank. The wine at Chateau La Conseillante was aged in 80% to 100% new, French oak for about 18 months until the legendary 2009 vintage.

Starting with the 2010 vintage, the amount of new oak was reduced to an average of 70% to 85% new, French oak, depending on the vintage. The estate recently added a second wine starting with the 2007 vintage, Duo de Conseillante.

In 2015, Chateau La Conseillante began micro-vinifying 6% of their wine in barrel. 2015 marked another change at the estate. The label was changed for the first time decades. The change is slight, but it’s another step in modernizing the chateau.

In 2016, the portion of wine vinified entirely in barrel was increased to 9%. Coupled with the other recent changes, the textural component has really improved here. The average annual production is close to 4,500 cases of wine per year.

The best vintages of Chateau La Conseillante are: 2017, 2016, 2015, 2012, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2006, 2005, 2001, 2000, 1998, 1990, 1989, 1985, 1982, 1970, 1961, 1959, 1955, 1950, 1947 and 1945. Older vintages with provenance could be worth taking a chance on at auction, as in the best years, the wines age extremely well.

Chateau La Conseillante Character and Style of the Wine

Chateau La Conseillante produces a wine of elegance, silky tannins and velvety textured fruit. It is never the most powerful Pomerol, nor the ripest. But perhaps it’s one of the most harmonious and refined wines in Pomerol. Black raspberry, plum dark cherry, chocolate and flowers are usually found in the perfume that pairs with the elegant, sensuous, refined, fresh, style of their wine.

When to Drink Chateau La Conseillante, Anticipated Maturity, Decanting Time

Chateau La Conseillante is much better with at least 8-12 years of aging in good vintages. Young vintages can be decanted for 2-3 hours, or more. This allows the wine to soften and open its perfume.

Older vintages might need very little decanting, just enough to remove the sediment. Chateau La Conseillante offers its best drinking and should reach peak maturity between 10-35 years of age after the vintage.

Serving Chateau La Conseillante with Wine, Food, Pairing Tips

Chateau La Conseillante is best served at 15.5 degrees Celsius, 60 degrees Fahrenheit. The cool, almost cellar temperature gives the wine more freshness and lift. Chateau La Conseillante is best paired with all types of classic meat dishes, veal, pork, beef, lamb, duck, game, roast chicken, roasted, braised and grilled dishes.

Chateau La Conseillante is also good with Asian dishes, hearty fish courses like tuna, salmon, mushrooms and pasta.

There is purity, freshness, depth and unbelievable sensuous textures. The wine just does not quit on your palate. If you're thinking about it, pull the trigger, this is that good.

As hard as it is to believe, this is even better than when tasted in March, earlier this year. The purity of fruit, silky tannins and velvet drenched textures are just a bit more concentrated and focused. This is a legend in the making.

Dark in color, the wine pops with scents of blackberry liqueur, violets, spice box, truffle, licorice, smoke and plums. On the palate, the wine has a richness and density seldom found here, but don't let that scare you because, as you would expect, the wine is fresh, elegant and refined. Nothing is different; there is simply more raw material. The fruit is perfect, the tannins are ripe and the liqueur and licorice remain with you for close to 50 seconds. The wine was made from a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Starting with the young vines, the Merlot was harvested from September 21 to October 13, representing the longest harvest in the history of the estate. The Cabernet Franc was picked on two dates, October 12 and October 17. The wine reached 14% alcohol with a pH of 3.65 and will be aged in 70% new French oak barrels.

Deep ruby in color with tints of purple. On the nose, an explosion of toasty sweet oak, vanilla, raspberry, plums, blackberries and spice finishing with a hint of anise. Dense, fat, plump entry on the palate. Tannic. Upon hitting your palate, the best descriptor I can think of is... Boom! Incredible lush waves of ripe, sexy, fresh, polished, Bordeaux Pomerol pure fruit with raspberry accents glide over your tasting receptors leaving you with a satisfied smile on your face. The finish lasts close to 50 seconds!

Lightness is showing through in the garnet color. The truffle, licorice, plum liqueur, cherry blossom and spice box aromas are the best part of the wine. Medium bodied, without the body or depth found in vintages like 2005, but with an elegant, fresh, ready to drink, spicy, red berry personality. This is not a vintage for long term aging. 2004 marks the debut vintage produced by Jean Michel Laporte.

The best showing ever for this vintage. The floral nuances with their strong violet component, truffles, tobacco and dark chocolate covered plum and cherry tones were exactly what the doctor ordered. Medium/full bodied, with a beautiful, refined, silky mouth feel, this is drinking great today. This could improve a but, but there is no reason not to be popping corks on this wine, if you have some in your cellar.

2001 Chateau La Conseillante is not about power, it’s about finesse. But La Coinseillante is never about power. With lush, soft, elegant textures, a nose of chocolate covered plums, black cherries, flowers and truffle, this is drinking perfectly today.

Cocoa, roses, black cherry, roses and truffle, medium bodied, refined and elegant in texture, the wine offers good freshness, but the fruit seems to be fading a bit. There is more acidity and less of the special lush quality found in La Conseillante. This is better on the nose than the palate. I’m going to finish my remaining bottles over the next few years before more of the fruit fades.

2001 La Conseillante offers strong scents of chocolate covered raspberry, flowers, cinnamon and smokey black cherry jam.In the mouth, the wine is elegance. Soft tannins and silky textures are followed with a black cherry, chocolate, spice and earthy perfume. I really liked the wine. While La Conseillante is always the quintessentially elegant Pomerol, I prefer the vintages with a little more concentration.

Still holding on to its last gasp of youth here, this might be a slightly more masculine Pomerol. The soaring aromatics are in play here. Full bodied, concentrated and with depth of flavor, the wine offers a structured wall of ripe, sweet, plum, cherry and truffle, along with a lot of tannin for a Pomerol of this age. Granted, this was from a magnum, so that should be taken into consideration. Still, I would give it a few more years to see where it goes.

Showing a hint of age at the edge of the glass, truffle smoke and wild cherry is the first thing you notice. The wine is fresh, sweet, sensuous, rich and elegant. There is complexity in the nose and on the palate. If you like young wines that are just now showing secondary flavors, but are not fully developed, this is a nice time to pop a cork. Else you can wait for more evolution. Popped and poured, the wine improved in the glass.

4,390 Views   Tasted 96

Better than the previous, although this was from a magnum, still, I have better hopes for the future with the wine now. Soft, silky and fresh, with sweet, ripe, red and black fruits, truffle, cocoa and floral notes, if you have a bottle, it's a good time to check in on it and pop a cork.

4,965 Views   Tasted 95

Surprisingly youthful. Popped and poured, it took an hour in the glass for the wine to soften and the floral, dark chocolate, black raspberry and mint aromas to emerge. Smooth, yet firm on the palate, this is a bright, crisp, elegant, very fresh style of Pomerol with a lot of tension. The finish is there with its fresh, sweet, dark cherry and cocoa flavors. My guess is, this will soften and develop more complexities as the wine ages for at least another 5-10 more years. But I do not think this is going to be one of the great vintages for this heralded chateau.

This stunningly aromatic Bordeaux wine, with its mélange of juicy, ripe black plums, black raspberry, flowers, truffle, mocha and spice gets you interested. This is a wine to buy!

Rockin' right out of the bottle! It reminded me of the 05. The intoxicating aromatics started off with hints of oak, quickly shifting to black fruit with cherry accents and spice. Round and opulent feeling in the mouth. Still young, this needs another 5-8 years until it all comes together.

More medium than full bodied, and moving to the red side of the style range, the wine is bright, crisp and fresh, but not as silky and plush as I like to find, with the wines of La Conseillante. My instincts say drink this over the next 5 years or so.

2,806 Views   Tasted 91

Ready to drink, I can easily like this wine, but it is not a wine to love. Lacking the concentration and freshness found in the top vintages, the wine really tries its best to deliver. While the fruit is ripe, the texture is polished and the aromatics are pretty, this is a good, but not great vintage for La Conseillante.

Since it was first released, the wine has continued to improve, adding depth and complexity with its chocolate covered plum, black cherry, truffle and floral personality. At 21 years of age, this still shows a firmness to its character. Over the past few years, the 1990 La Conseillante has continued improving and is now the better of the two vintages. This exploded from the glass with scents of violets, bitter chocolate, fresh herbs, black raspberries, plums, cherries, fig, exotic spices and spring flowers. Sweet, ripe, juicy plums are all over the place in the :40 finish. This is pure silk, velvet and decadence. For the first 2 decades of life, I found the 89 to be a better wine. Not any more.

The only problem I have with this wine is, I can never decide if I prefer the 89 or 90.

Plummy, blackberry, floral and forest notes were easy to find. Very extracted and concentrated, but if you’re thinking this is going to provide a sexy experience like the 89, think again. The big difference between the 89 and 90 is, aside from the sheer size, the 90 also sports a slight tannic, chocolate quality in the finish. This remains a big, brooding Pomerol with all the right stuff, but it’s still so young.

1989 Chateau La Conseillante was the first Bordeaux wine I purchased by the case. I remember those early days in the mid 1990’s, when the wine was stacked from the floor to ceiling and was priced at a whopping $40 per bottle! While this is close to fully mature, the wine still delivers lush, opulent, sensuous textures, licorice, plum, chocolate and plum fragrances and a finish that offers a beautiful sense of purity, freshness and velvet. There is no hurry to drink it, but I doubt it’s going to improve.

What the wine lacks in power, it makes up for it with opulent, silky, refined textures that finish with chocolate coated, black raspberry and dark cherry. This bottle offered a better tasting experience than the previous bottle from the same case. That being said, this is fully mature and is probably best enjoyed over the next 3-10 years.

89 La Conseillante at its best can simply be described as bottled hedonism. Fortunately for us, this bottle was at its best! What a surprise to find a war year bottle that was rocking'! At 101 years of age, this still had gas in the tank. Most of the fruit has faded, but the earth, spice, tobacco, smoke, truffle and ash still allowed room for plums to poke through. Ruby with amber in color, there was freshness, soft textures and hints of cherry in the finish. What a privilege it was to taste bottled history, made while World War 1 was raging.
