1953 Bordeaux wine continues offering charm, elegance, exciting aromatics and silky textures. With older Bordeaux vintages, it’s all about the bottle and provenance. From what I’ve read, 1953 Bordeaux wine was fabulous when the wines were young. The best examples continue offering pleasure today. Due to the age of the vintage, there are not any great buys around. But some wines are worth seeking out. 1953 Bordeaux wine is fully mature and requires drinking. But at close to 70 years of age, that’s not a bad thing.
However, 1953 Bordeaux is a better vintage for the Left Bank. The best 1953 Bordeaux wine comes from St. Julien, Graves, Margaux and especially Pauillac. 1953 Chateau Lafite Rothschild is the wine of the vintage. 1953 Chateau Mouton Rothschild and 1953 Chateau Margaux are not far behind. Calon Segur, Ducru Beaucaillou and Leoville Barton are also strong. From Pessac Leognan, 1953 Haut Brion is of historic quality and La Mission Haut Brion is also good, but not at the sane level of quality. From the Right Bank, quality. 1953 Cheval Blanc and 1953 Ausone are also outstanding examples of 1953 Bordeaux wine. However, buy with caution, as most wines and bottles are well past their prime time drinking stage.
1953 Bordeaux wine is the product of a hot, warm growing season, with plenty of sunlight. The only minor problem came with some rain in September. That pushed the harvest back a bit. In fact, the delayed start of the harvest could have added to the quality of the wines as it allowed for a slightly longer hang time, giving the grapes a better opportunity to ripen on the vines. The 1953 Bordeaux vintage harvest began September 28, making it the latest Bordeaux harvest start date in the decade.
