2008 is a strong vintage for Bordeaux wine. The best wines have charm, character, depth and polished tannins. Much of the success of 2008 is due to the unusually long hang time the growers were afforded before harvesting.
Bordeaux deserves attention for the numerous over performing small properties that produce outstanding value Bordeaux wines. These delicious wines can be enjoyed young and they will stand up to some ageing as well.
At its best, 2012 Bordeaux wines are lighter in style, perhaps similar to 2001 or 1999, blended with 2002. In the Right Bank, where the wines were more successful overall, numerous chateaux compare the vintage with 1998. As matter of quality, I do not agree with that premise.
The warm jolt of heat and sunshine from September 1 seems to be continuing. September 2, Chateau d’Yquem began harvesting the grapes for their dry, white wine, Y. Several growers in Pessac Leognan are picking this week as well.
2018 AOC Bordeaux produced some very good, simple, well-priced, wines that are drinkable on release. More than just generic AOC wines, there are some very strong wines that because they do not follow AOC rules, they are sold as simple Bordeaux, even though they quite good. These wines are worth considering as they can offer incredible value.
