Chateau La Fleur Petrus takes its name from its closest neighbors. The Bordeaux wine property is situated less than a stones throw from Petrus. You can also walk to Chateau Lafleur. Not bad company to keep if you’re a chateau located on the famous Pomerol plateau.

In 1953, Chateau La Fleur Petrus was purchased by Jean-Pierre Moueix from the Garet family. Prior to that purchase, La Fleur Petrus was the property of numerous owners and dates back to 1782, the year the chateau on the property was built. Going back as far as the late 1800′s, Chateau La Fleur Petrus began to earn a reputation in the late 19th century, when it owned by the Constant family. The Constant’s were well established in Pomerol, as they also owned the well-known and respected estate of Chateau Clinet. At the time, in the early years of the estate, the wines were sold under the name Petrus Lafleur. Petrus Lafleur eventually passed to the Pineau family. It was under their ownership that the name was changed to Chateau La Fleur Petrus. The Pineau family sold ChateauLa Fleur Petrus to the Garet family, who as I mentioned earlier, sold the Right Bank estate to Ets. Moueix.

While Chateau La Fleur Petrus had cachet before it was bought by Moueix, the wine clearly improved when it was taken over by the Moueix family. Shortly after the vineyard was purchased, the vineyards were decimated and had to be replanted after the 1956 frost. Chateau La Fleur Petrus increased their Bordeaux wine land holdings in 1994, when they added 4 hectares of old vines to their Pomerol vineyards. These vines were obtained from another famous neighbor, Chateau Le Gay. The style of the wines at Chateau La Fleur Petrus is similar to its chateau. It’s an elegant, classic, understated, French country house that was built in 1782. The chateau resides on the northern side of the Pomerol plateau.

Chateau La Fleur Petrus is a finesse style of Bordeaux wine from Pomerol that in certain years, has the ability to age gracefully for decades. Starting with the 1998 vintage, they have been increasing the quality, depth and richness of Chateau La Fleur Petrus.  The 2009 La Fleur Petrus is a stunning Pomerol wine and is possibly the finest wine the estate has ever produced.

The 14.5 hectare Pomerol vineyard of Chateau La Fleur Petrus is planted to 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc on gravel with clay soils. Even though the vineyard is located just across a small, dirt road from Petrus and only a single vine away from Chateau Lafleur, the terroir of Chateau La Fleur Petrus is different than either estate, with its mix of gravel and clay soils. Very little, if any blue clay is found in their soils.

For the production of the wine, two laser sorting tables have been in use since 2009. The winery uses thermoregulated concrete vats. Starting in 2004 they began using stainless tanks. They do no bleedings and malolactic fermentation takes place in tank. In 2009, along with Petrus and other top Moueix properties, they utilized the new, Optical Sorting technology. Chateau La Fleur Petrus is aged in French, oak barrels that range from 33% to as much as 50% new oak for about 18 months. The amount of oak and time in the barrel fluctuates, depending on the quality and style of the vintage. The wine is racked 3-4 times per year and it is fined using egg whites. Chateau La Fleur Petrus releases under 4,000 cases of Bordeaux wine per year.

Starting in 1998, the quality of wines produced at Chateau La Fleur Petrus shot up to an entirely new level! 1998, 2000 and 2005 are compelling vintages of La Fleur Petrus. But as good as they are, the 2009 La Fleur Petrus is the wine to buy!

  6. 2006 Château La Fleur-Pétrus

    1. With its cocoa powder coated cherry, earth, herb, black raspberry and truffle scented nose, the wine is a pleasure to swirl and sniff. Medium bodied, soft and silky, the wine finishes with clean, fresh cherries. I wish the wine had a little more depth and concentration. Still, I'd give it at least a few more years to develop.

  7. 2005 Château La Fleur-Pétrus

    1. Licorice, chocolate covered plums, flowers and truffle scents open as soon as the cork is popped from the bottle. On the palate, this is an elegant, medium bodied, lighter, fresher style of Pomerol. Soft and sophisticated, this chocolate, plum and black raspberry filled wine needs another 4-6 years before it starts revealing all its ample charms.

  8. 2001 Château La Fleur-Pétrus

    1. This finesse styled, medium bodied Pomerol, is drinking perfectly, with its silky, fresh, red cherry, cocoa and earthy personality. I wish it had a bit more depth, because it's really a nice style of wine. This is a not a wine to age for decades, I'd drink it over the next several years.

  9. 2000 Château La Fleur-Pétrus

    1. What a sexy little beast. Plummy, spicy scents get your attention. But the plush, rich entry and wonderful mouthfeel keep you in the game. This is already so good, if you have a case, pop a bottle. However, it will only get better. It was good enough that if I did not own it already, I'd buy a case.

  10. 1998 Château La Fleur-Pétrus

    1. Black licorice, minerality, earth, milk chocolate covered cherries and fresh raspberry scents focus your attention on what's in the glass. The silk and velvet, palate caressing mouth feel is pure, sensuous Pomerol. The wine ends with an elegant, soft, fresh, clean, spicy cherry filled finish. Drinking perfectly today, this will age and improve for at least another 15 or more years. But there is no reason not to open a bottle of this sexy wine today.

    2. Chocolate covered boysenberries, truffle, violets, mocha, smoke, toast, spicy black cherry and earthy aromas get you interested into knowing more about what's in the glass. Full bodied and filled with luscious ripe plums, chocolate and boysenberry, this sensuous, opulent, pleasure machine of a wine is running on all cylinders today and should get better with time. This is the best showing yet for1998 La Fleur Petrus. I'm glad I have a few more bottles left in the cellar.

    3. Rich and filled with ripe plummy aromatics, this silky wine finishes with sweet chocolate sensations. Better than the 95, but slightly lighter than the 00, the wine offers a lot of finesse and complexity. The wine should improve over the next several years.

    4. This is a fine wine, with ample levels of sweet, ripe fruit, silky textures, medium body and a long plummy finish. This estate, located next to Petrus on the plateau started marching to a new drum with the 95 vintage and they have not looked back. Newer vintages keep getting better and better.

  11. 1995 Château La Fleur-Pétrus

    1. Initial scents of violets, cocoa, cherry earth moved to blackberry and cigar box, truffle and kirsch. After 3 hours in the glass, the dusty tannins shifted to a more friendly dry sensation, with fresh blackberry in the finish. This will be a long lived wine. It has the structure to age for at least another 15-20 more years. But it will always have the tannic signature of the vintage with its refined, masculine expression of Pomerol.

  12. 1990 Château La Fleur-Pétrus

    1. Earth, cherries, red plums, spice and herbal aromas make up the perfume. Medium bodied, elegant in character, but light in weight and lacking the concentration found in the top vintages of this Pomerol wine. This is already past full maturity and should be consumed sooner than later.

  13. 1989 Château La Fleur-Pétrus

    1. This could almost be called Pomerol light. Light color, light aromatics, light palate presence. Fully mature and then some, this wine lacks the stuffing for further aging.

  14. 1987 Château La Fleur-Pétrus

    1. This showed why vintages matter. If you're one of those people believing that great Chateau make stellar wines in off vintages, but a bottle of 87 Petrus and put that theory to the test. What a dud. The best descriptor I could think of for this tired, fruitless wine was, there is no there, there.

  15. 1982 Château La Fleur-Pétrus

    1. Sporting a light, ruby color, the wine opens with an earthy, truffle, tobacco, bright cherry and red plum nose. Medium/full bodied, with soft, gentle textures, this is fully mature and is best consumed over the next few years as the fruit is clearly starting to fade.

  16. 1975 Château La Fleur-Pétrus

    1. This traditionally styled wine showed how far Bordeaux has come over the past few decades. Do not expect elegance or ripe fruit with this old lady. It's not going to happen. For people who think Bordeaux was better before Parker, this wine's for you.

  17. 1955 Château La Fleur-Pétrus

    1. This was light, ruby in color with hints of bricking. The delicate perfume offers spice, flowers, tobacco, truffles, smoke and herbs. Soft, elegant, and charming on the palate, the earthy, red fruit wine remained at the same level for about 90 minutes before gently slipping away.

    2. 55 Lafleur Petrus initially had some nice complex aromatic qualities. For the first few moments, some fruit could be found in the finish. But, this wine began decomposing in the glass after the first 5 minutes. It was fun while it lasted.
