Lalande de Pomerl2 300x224 La Fleur de Bouard Le Plus Lalande de Pomerol Bordeaux Wine

La Fleur de Bouard Le Plus is the idea of Hubert de Bouard, the owner of Chateau Angelus and Chateau Bellevue in St. Emilion.  La Fleur de Bouard Le Plus comes from a two-hectare section of the 20.2-hectare Bordeaux wine vineyard situated on the Lalande plateau. The terroir is simlar to Pomerol with its deep, gravelly soils and  10% clay. The vine density ranges from 6,500 vines per hectare in the parcels with oldest vines up to 8,500 vines per hectare in the more recent plantations. The average age of the vines at La Fleur de Bouard Le Plus is about 40 years old.

At La Fleur de Bouard Le Plus, yields are kept low. To give you an idea of how low the yields are, for the 2009 vintage, the yields of La Fleur de Bouard Le Plus were only 20 hectoliters per hectare! At the vineyards of La Fleur de Bouard Le Plus, they practice crop-thinning and hand-harvesting. The fruit is destemmed by hand. The juice sees a five day cold soak at 10° C and a four-week maceration in “OVNI” stainless steel, along with very short, squat shaped oak tanks. The wine receives regular pigeages. Malolactic takes place in 100% new French oak barrels from Taransaud (40%), Demptos (40%), Darnajou (15%), and Vicard (5%). Aging sur lies in French oak barrels for an estimated 33 months.

The blend of La Fleur de Bouard Le Plus is usually close to 100% Merlot. Hubert de Bouard likes to push the envelop with La Fleur de Bouard Le Plus in terms of quality. In 2009, not only did the fruit, skins and seeds fully ripen, so did the stems. In fact, one barrel was fermented with the stems.  By 2010, it was not determined if that barrel would be included in the Grand Vin of La Fleur de Bouard Le Plus. Not much of this special Right Bank wine is made. Along the very expensive method of producing the wine, the fact that only 5,000 bottles of La Fleur de Bouard Le Plus are produced each years, makes this an expensive wine for the appellation.
