The wine is pure silk on the palate. There are no edges or corners. Everything feels in place. It is completely seamless. The wine is pure, fresh, and expansive. The mid-palate picks up its currants and plums, while the finish holds them in place, and expands in all 4 directions, with perfect balance in its 60-second plus finish. This is the best vintage of Pichon Comtesse ever produced! If you have the extra money, this is the wine to buy as it will provide dividends for decades as it ages and evolves. There is a sweetness to the fruit, combined with salinity, soft tannins and freshness on the palate, finishing with a strong touch of salt that accompanies the peppery, chewy red fruits in the endnote. This is a modern-classically styled vintage for Pichon Lalande. The wine blends 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and 2% Merlot. 12.9% ABV. pH 3.75. This is the second highest percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the history of the estate. The harvest took place from September 22 ending October 5. The best bottle of this I have ever tasted just stole the show! When the cork came out, looking good, I had high hopes. When the wine hit my glass, I knew it was a show stopper with its cedar, lead pencil, truffle, Cuban cigar, and red currant perfume. The soft, silky, layered palate was everything you want in a Pichon Lalande. This is a wow wine. If you ever see it with provenance, buy it! If well stored, and this is a big if... It is always nice when older vintages show well as this did. Right off the aromatic profile, with its cigar wrapper, cedar chest, herbs, smoke, peppery red currants and spice let you know the wine was special. What a beautiful wine! Popped and poured, the essence of violets and roses started off the aromatic show. They were quickly joined by Cigar wrapper, cedar wood, smoke, leather, and bright red fruits. Medium bodied, elegant, silky, vibrant and gorgeous to feel as it caresses your palate. Surprisingly, the wine put on weight as it remained in the glass. This is what fully mature, Bordeaux is all about. One little note, the bottle has not moved since release and was recorked in the mid-1980's, so it is going to be hard to replicate this experience.
