Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux

2018 Pavillon Rouge du Château  (Margaux) 93

Medium-bodied and elegantly styled, the wine is composed of ripe red berries, flowers and cherry pipe tobacco nuances. Silky, refined and lifted, there is more volume, density and tannins than usual here with a gorgeous purity to the fruit. This is going to need 3-4 years of aging before it is ready to drink. The wine was made from blending 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, and 9% Cabernet Franc. It is hard to believe this is a second wine, as it is better than any vintage of Margaux from the 60s and 70s and with some exceptions -- the 80s! 92-94 Pts

Cherries, anise, tobacco and cigar box notes rise amid a floral background to create an incredibly elegant, refined, fresh, long and sweet wine. Lift, purity of fruit, substance and length make this the best vintage of Pavillon Rouge I have ever tasted -- a testament to Paul Pontallier. The wine was produced from a blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc, reaching 14.% alcohol with pH of 3.67. Of the harvest, 23% was used for Pavillon Rouge du Margaux. This wine is better than any vintage of Margaux produced in the 1970's and with 2-3 exceptions, that same thing goes for the 80's too! 93 - 95 Pts

Earthy red fruits, and a hint of cocoa lead you to a wine with freshness and spicy red fruits with minerality. Medium/full bodied, with elegant tannins and freshness, give this a few years to come around, as it will gain in softness and nuances.

Already drinking well, with its sensuous textures and layers of sweet, ripe fruits, the wine is clean, fresh, rich and even sexy. It’s amazing to consider, but this second wine of Margaux is better than any wine produced in the 1960’s, 1970’s and for several vintages made in the 80’s as well. In part, some of this is due to the creation of the new third wine, Margaux de Margaux, which affords this wine a much better selection.

With a developed character, starting with the color, you can easily sense the earthy, herbal, secondary characteristics. Slightly past full maturity, the wine is soft, almost, almost light actually. There is still some fruit remaining in the finish, but if you holding any, you are best advised to drink up, before the remaining fruit fades.

This is probably drinking at peak and while there is no real hurry to drink it, there is no reason to age it any longer either.

Fully developed, the secondary notes of tobacco leaf, kirsch, spice and cedar are easy to find. On the palate, the wine is medium bodied, and shows notes of green herbs and leaf, along with the light, red cherries. Better on the nose than the palate, this needs to be consumed sooner than later, to retain the remainder of the fruit.
