Tablas Creek History, Overview

The foundation of Tablas Creek grew out of a friendship between the Perrin family, the owners of Chateau Beaucastel in Chateauneuf du Pape, and the importer, Robert Haas. Robert Haas is the founder of Vineyard Brands, which is a larger importer of various wines to the United States. Talked about for years, Tablas Creek was born when the Perrin family and Robert Haas purchased 120 acres of land in 1989. Located in the Las Tablas region of Paso Robles, it is easy to find the inspiration behind the estates new name. The specific land was purchased because the terroir reminded them of what they find in the Southern Rhone, due to its climate, and rocky soils.

Tablas Creek produces a massive portfolio of Rhone styled wines, most of which are made from Rhone Valley grape varieties. At Tablas Creek you find of course, Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre and Counoise, which are all used for red wines. But there are also significant plantings of Roussanne, Marsanne, Grenache Blanc and Viognier that are used to make white wines. In addition, they make rose' and dessert styled wines as well.

Tablas Creek Vineyards, Wines, Winemaking

All work in the Tablas Creek Vineyards is 100% organic. To assist in their natural, biodynamic approach, they have enlisted the help of sheep, alpacas and donkeys, which eat the cover crops, adding natural fertilizer to the soil. They were certified as being 100% organic in 2003, and my guess, they will receive certification for being biodynamic, sooner than later.

Cotes de Tablas are made from estate fruit that are meant to drink quite early. Patelin de Tablas wines are made from purchased fruit from within the Paso Robles appellation.

In addition to our red and white Rhône blends, we produce a dry rosé, small quantities of varietal wines, as well as small-production blends and dessert wines.

Serving and Decanting Tablas Creek with Wine, Food, Pairing Tips

Tablas Creek is best served at 15.5 degrees Celsius, 60 degrees Fahrenheit. The cool, almost cellar temperature gives the wine more freshness and lift. Young vintages can be decanted for 1 hour or so, depending on the character of the vintage. This allows the wine to soften and open its perfume. Older vintages might need very little decanting, just enough to remove the sediment. Tablas Creek is best served with all types of classic meat dishes, veal, pork, beef, lamb, duck, game, roast chicken, ribs, hamburgers, barbecue, roasted, braised, grilled dishes and stews. Tablas Creek is also good with Asian dishes, hearty fish courses like tuna, salmon, mushrooms and pasta.

The white wine of Tablas Creek is best served with all types of seafood and shellfish, sushi, sashimi, chicken, veal, pork and cheese.
