2020 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou  (St. Julien) 98

Richly colored, the wine delivers a complex nose of cigar box, tobacco leaf, wet forest floor, camphor, red and black currants, blackberry and creme de cassis. Supple, sensuous, elegant and concentrated, the wine focuses on its refined character, purity of fruit and silky textures. Long, vibrant and incredibly refined, the finish builds as it lingers. This gem should start to really unfurl after its 10th birthday and provide fabulous drinking for 25-35 years after that. Not as powerful as some recent vintages, instead this is a stunningly graceful Ducru Beaucaillou. Produced from blending 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot, 13.5% ABV. Picking took place September 11 - September 30. Yields were low at close to 30 hectoliters per hectare. To celebrate 300 years of Ducru Beaucaillou, the estate created a special bottling for one-time-only bottle. 97-99 Pts

2018 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou  (St. Julien) 99

Intensely colored, the wine is completely opaque. The next thing you notice is the aromatics which pop thanks to the array of flowers, black and dark red fruits, forest floor, espresso, wet earth, tobacco leaf and bitter chocolate. Full-bodied, concentrated, rich, deep, opulent, fresh and intense, the wine coats your palate and sticks with you. This is a good thing because it is difficult not to want more of all those sweet, ripe, luscious fruits. The purity, symmetry and length keep on going for close to 60 seconds! Give it at least 12-15 years to age and it could hit the triple digit mark! The wine blends 85% Cabernet Sauvignon with 15% Merlot, 14.5% ABV. The Grand Vin was made from only 35% of the harvest. 99 Points

Pitch black in color, the wine explodes in the glass with flowers, black fruits, wet earth, rocks, stones and a vintage cigar box from the Hotel Monte Carlo. The depth of fruit and flavor is surreal. The wine has authority. Baskets of red and black pit fruit drench your palate, staining your teeth. It is refined, well-designed and dances on air. This is a contender for the best vintage ever produced at Ducru and that is really saying something considering the incredible run of vintages produced here since 2005. The wine was made from a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot, reaching 14.5% alcohol with a pH of 3.7 and is aging in 100% new, French oak barrels for about 18 months. The harvest took place September 28-October 10. The Grand Vin was made from only 35% of the harvest. 98-100 Pts

Freshness and accessibility are the hallmarks of this wine. The customary level of density is improved with added grace, elegance, pliability and an upbeat, spicy core of attention seeking fruits. This is not to say that the wine is light. It is to explain that power has been refined with approachability, brighter fruits and exceedingly silky tannins. The wine was made from a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot and is aging in 100% new, French oak barrels. The wine reached 13.51% alcohol with a pH of 3.79. The harvest took place from September 18 to September 30. 97 Points

Voluptuous, silky, dense and rich, the wine hits your palate and stays there with layers of lusciously textured, perfectly ripe cassis and blackberries. Full-bodied, concentrated and balanced between power and elegance, this is a stunning example of Ducru Beaucaillou. It is hard to decide if I prefer the sensuality on the palate, the length or purity. So I did what needed to be done, I took another sip. And with this in your glass, you will do the same. The wine is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot. 99 Points

Produced from a blend that includes the highest percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon recorded in the history of the estate at 91%. The remainder of the blend is Merlot. Reaching 13% alcohol, the wine has a pH of 3.61. Smoke, licorice, boysenberry, coffee, and tobacco leaf notes produced a refined wine, which relies more on elegance than power. The wine offers good freshness in its medium-bodied, red and black fruit-filled finish. Bruno Borie, who has started comparing the style of his wines to various beautiful women, likened this wine to Fan BingBing, the famous Chinese actress. Her style was slinky and sensuous and, according to Borie, accurately describes the 2012 Ducru Beaucaillou. 93-95 Pts

Classic and classy, 2 hours of air added more softness and brought this around quite nicely. The wine is full-bodied, concentrated, and tannic. There is a strong sensation of cedar, tobacco leaf, herbs, spice and bright, fresh red berries from start to finish. You can easily give this another decade in the cellar for more secondary nuances and enjoy it over the following 2 decades after that. 95 Points

This just keeps getting better and better with age. The nose was like a great Cuban cigar dipped in cassis that we were smoking in a wet forest. One of the better wines from what has become a difficult vintage, due to the strong, harsh nature of the tannins, here you find a wine that is classic in nature. Firm, slightly rustic and with a touch of green in the nose and palate, this is what old-school, classic Bordeaux is all about. The wine is full-bodied and loaded with fruit, but rustic nature of the tannins intrude on what otherwise would have been a nice party. 91 Points

Firm, strict style of wine, the tannic spice is still there. Medium bodied and austere in nature, the aromatics are the best part of wine, but the hardness in the personality took away from its charming nature. If this old school styled, tannic wine is your thing, you'll probably like it more than I did. 90 Points

Black cherry, tobacco, pepper, slate, earth and creme de cassis aromas paired with the full bodied, beefy, masculine, style of tannic wine produced in 1995. An austere, brawny, powerful, hard style of wine with a strong tannic spine that reminds me of a typical 1986 Bordeaux. From recorked bottles, this was a clean machine. I asked Bruno Borie how he found 2 clean bottles out of all the tainted bottles. He explained that during recorking, they destroyed all the tainted bottles, which was a massive percentage of the wines they had in their cellar. They saved just the good bottles. Medium bodied, tobacco, cassis, earth and cigar box driven, this bottle was all about its classic Bordeaux style and charm. This is fully mature. There is no reason to wait to pop a cork. 91 Points

One of the recently released bottles from Ducru Beaucaillou, which you can tell, as it sports the modern design, was about as good a bottle of 82 Ducru as you are ever going to have. Full-bodied, elegant, rich, multi-layered, and multi-faceted, the tobacco, cedar, currant, and wet forest profile on the nose was great. But the layers of ripe, lush, rich fruits with their silky, refined tannins stole the show. This looked like a perfect bottle. High fill, spinning capsule and the wine had great, deep color. But with all that, and a nose of smoke, truffle, blackberry, cedar wood, caramel, cassis and earth, this bottle did not open as well as expected.
