With bricking around the edges, the classically styled wine is medium-bodied, showing notes of cedar, leaf, tobacco, cedar, and bright red fruits in the nose. Austere in nature, with strictness to the tannins and bright, almost tart, earthy, herbal, red fruits on the palate, you can drink this now, or hold it, but it is not going to change much from here.

Medium/full bodied, tannic, with rusticity sensed in the tannins, as they are not fully ripe. While there is cassis, blackberry, some tobacco and earth, a touch of underripeness is tasted and felt in the finish. Tasters who do not like ripe wines, or who prefer more traditional styled Bordeaux, will like this better than I did. This is the last vintage before Bruno Borie took over the estate. This blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon and 18% Merlot is probably fully mature. There is not much reason to let it age further.

When to Drink Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou, Anticipated Maturity, Decanting Time

Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou is not a wine to drink on the young side. The wine is usually far too tannic, powerful, and reserved during its youth. Young vintages can be decanted for an average of 3-4 hours, give or take. This allows the wine to soften and open its perfume.

Older vintages might need very little decanting, just enough to remove the sediment. Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou is usually better with at least 15 years of bottle age. Of course, that can vary slightly, depending on the vintage character. Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou offers its best drinking and should reach peak maturity between 18 and 50 years of age after the vintage.

Serving Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou with Wine, Food, Pairing Tips
