It has been far too long since I last popped a cork on this treat. It takes no effort to find the blackberries, flowers, cigar box, 5 spice, smoke, licorice, and currants on the nose. With 45 minutes in the decanter, the wine is fully open on the nose and on the silky, fresh, elegant blend of black and red fruits with their spice-filled character. The wine is vibrant and refined with a nice shot of dark chocolate that comes in on the backend of the endnote. Drink from 2022-2040.

This is a very good wine and strong vintage for Chateau Margaux. Prices for all the First Growths have made most vintages far too expensive for people to buy. The best value in a Chateau Margaux is found in the 1999. With polished textures, supple tannins and a nose revealing tobacco, truffle, smoke, dark berries, forest floor and spicy aromatics, you can enjoy this bottle now, or age it for another decade or two without any trouble.

Violets, tobacco, cocoa, coffee, creamy cassis, blackberry, cigar box and truffle get you instantly involved with the wine. In the mouth, the wine is silky smooth, with a rich, ripe, sweet, cassis, black cherry and wild strawberry jam finish. It's fun to drink now, but a few more years of bottle age will more complexity to the wine. The wine softened and fleshed out after 3 hours in the glass

This combines red and black fruitswith cassis in the nose and palate. Very expressive, elegant and round. For Margaux, this will drink young.

When to Drink Chateau Margaux, Anticipated Maturity, Decanting Time

Chateau Margaux is not a wine to drink on the young side. The wine is usually far too tannic, powerful, and reserved during its youth. Young vintages can be decanted for an average of 3-6 hours, give or take. This allows the wine to soften and open its perfume. Older vintages might need very little decanting, just enough to remove the sediment.

Chateau Margaux is usually better with at least 15 years of bottle age. Of course, that can vary slightly, depending on the vintage character. Chateau Margaux offers its best drinking and should reach peak maturity between 18 and 60 years of age after the vintage.

Serving Chateau Margaux with Wine, Food, Pairings

Chateau Margaux is best served at 15.5 degrees Celsius, 60 degrees Fahrenheit. The cool, almost cellar temperature gives the wine more freshness and lift.

Chateau Margaux is best paired with all types of classic meat dishes, veal, pork, beef, lamb, duck, game, roast chicken, roasted, braised, and grilled dishes. Chateau Margaux is also good when matched with Asian dishes, rich fish courses like tuna, mushrooms, and pasta.

The white wine of Chateau Margaux, Pavillon Blanc can be paired perfectly with all types of seafood, shellfish, sushi, sashimi, veal, chicken, pork, and assorted cheeses.
