1945 La Mission Haut Brion from Magnum… This was my first time with this legendary wine. OMG, that’s “Oh My God”, is the best descriptor I can fathom. This wine was so fragrant, just popping the bottle would fill a room with its aromatics. Earthy, truffle, forest floor, spice, tobacco, fresh herbs, coffee and smoke do not begin to describe what you can find in this wine. Incredible layers of concentrated fruit that is ripe, fat and rich, further complicated with decades of age excite your senses. Chocolate, raspberry, cherry, strawberry, licorice, leather and coffee linger on your palate over sixty seconds while your remaining senses catch up to get in on the party. The wine offers an intense purity of fruit that is difficult to find, especially after 60 years of age

When to Drink Chateau La Mission Haut Brion, Anticipated Maturity, Decanting Time

Chateau La Mission Haut Brion needs as long as 15-25 years in the best years until it truly offers its best drinking experiences. Young vintages can be decanted for 3-4 hours or more. This allows the wine to soften and open its perfume.

Older vintages might need very little decanting, just enough to remove the sediment. Chateau La Mission Haut Brion offers its best drinking and should reach peak maturity between 15-60 years of age after the vintage.
