The 1965 Bordeaux harvest officially started October 2. The growing season is known for cold weather, rain and rot. 1965 Bordeaux wine is rumored to be atrocious.  Fortunately, or unfortunately, (or perhaps a bit both) I have never seen or tasted a bottle of 1965 Bordeaux wine. Michael Broadbent called 1965 Bordeaux wine mean, acidic and short. And that’s when the wines were young and in good shape! Robert Parker made even worse comments. I am happy he tasted the wines and I didn’t.

On the bright side, Rock and Roll was in full bloom. The Beatles shared the airwaves with The Who, The Byrds, The Kinks and The Yardbirds. The soul sound of the Motown and Stax era provided the soundtrack for the year. If you really need a wine to celebrate a birthday or anniversary, pass on 1965 Bordeaux. Look for Vega Sicilia from Spain. Some California Cabernet Sauvignon wines could still offer pleasure, if well stored.
