Perhaps I did not get it, or maybe I was the only honest taster in the room that found this wine sharp, tart and overly acidic. Much better on the nose than the palate with its floral, spice and red berry character. The wine was just not that much fun to taste. My Burgundy loving friends assured me, the wine just needed time and food. I am positive they were seduced by the label and price.

I am positive this bottle was not 100% correct. What should have been a stunning wine fell short of the mark. The color was that of a wine older than its true age. Spice, earth, roasted dark and red berries made for an interesting nose, but the wine came up short in the spicy, red berry finish. It was not voted the best wine of the tasting by anyone in the group. Such is life. There are not great wines after 15-20 years, just great bottles.

This profound wine offers stunning aromatics, a palate presence that was as deep, silky and complex as any wine ever made, from anyplace! This was accompanied by an ocean of perfectly ripe fruit that filled every inch of my palate with sweet, elegant, plush fruit and ended with a finish that kept on going. This wine was off the charts! As most people know I am not a Burg guy. I've been fortunate to have been able to taste several great Burgs over the years including a few vintages of Romanee Conti. This 90 La Tache remains the best Burg I've tasted and believe it or not, one of the top wines I experienced in 2006! That being said, I would never spend the thousands of dollars per bottle needed to buy this wine. But on someone else's dime, it sure was tasty!

Clearly, I am not going to become a Burgundy drinker. I do not get it. When you factor the insane price for this wine, which is $11,000 per bottle, the Emperor has no clothes. The wine was tart, crisp, bright and energetic. The fruit was clean, offering a sense of earthy purity to its bright red flavor profile coupled with herbal, underbrush and fennel notes. But there was far too much acidity and firmness to be fun to drink. The nose was clearly the best part of the experience. But I want to drink a wine, not just smell it. Served double blind, when the label was revealed, this bottle that cost as much a car for some people did not get better in the glass.

There was a firm, hard, acidic quality to the fruit that took away from the wine. The fruit offered a nice cherry essence with fennel and dried herb notes. But there was far more tart than sweet sensations in the hard personality that left me wanting riper fruit. I am sure there are many people that will love this wine. But it did not work for me. Please note, this was served double blind. OK, I admit, I am not the biggest Burgundy fan on the planet, but for the record, the 1990 La Tache was stunning. This on the other hand was merely a good, but not close to great wine.

Not oxidized, but clearly this was past its prime as most of what remained was the light, floral, citrus, lime and mineral nose. The wine was light and ending with tart, dry, chalky, lemon sensation. All things considered, I know this was an honor to taste. But it is, what it is... If you have a bottle and want to drink it, it's not going to get better from here.

Light red tea in color, the wine was better on the medium bodied, soft, silky, red cherry, earth, herb and spice loaded palate, with its sweet, ripe, red fruits than on the nose, which combined the sweetness of red cherries with wet, earth and an earthy, almost barnyard character. The wine faded in the glass.

Compelling in every sense of the word, the rose hip tea colored wine was stunning! The purity of fruit, freshness and silky, elegant, refined textures was off the hook. The cherries tasted like they were just picked off the vine. There was an almost port-like sweetness to the red fruit. There was length, expansion of flavors and so much, cherry, kirsch, bay leaf, Asian spice box and licorice, you just kept going back for me. Worth the money? I suppose that depends on your net-worth and sense of value. But value aside, this was an astounding wine tasting experience. The bottle came from the original purchaser, which I am sure added to the quality of the wine.
