1955 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou St. Julien Wine Tasting Note

1955 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou  (St. Julien) 93

A wine I seldom see, after tasting this bottle, I wish I had a few more in my cellar. Soft, gentle, elegant, medium-bodied and serving up its mix of bright, sweet and tart red fruits with ease, you also found delicate notes of tobacco leaf, cigar box, herbs and cherries from start to finish. If the endnote was longer, the wine would have merited a much higher score.

1955 Ducru Beaucaillu is the color of light ruby with tea. In the nose, the wine is filled with rich earthy scents, cassis, tobacco, cedar, mushroom and Asian spices. Elegant, soft, sophisticated and suave on the palate for the first 20/30 minutes, this dark cherry, spice, tobacco and strawberry filled finish lasts close to 30 seconds. After 20/30 minutes the wine quickly lost fruit. But those initial moments were a lot of fun to taste.

When to Drink Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou, Anticipated Maturity, Decanting Time

Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou is not a wine to drink on the young side. The wine is usually far too tannic, powerful and reserved during its youth. Young vintages can be decanted for an average of 3-4 hours, give or take. This allows the wine to soften and open its perfume.

Older vintages might need very little decanting, just enough to remove the sediment. Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou is usually better with at least 15 years of bottle age. Of course that can vary slightly, depending on the vintage character. Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou offers its best drinking and should reach peak maturity between 18 and 50 years of age after the vintage.
