In support of the upcoming Central Coast Wine Classic, August 10-14, an invitation only event was held in the top penthouse of the Granada Building, by far Santa Barbara`s tallest structure at 8 stories[ and preserved to remain as such with a 4 story moratorium], hosted by the owners of this fabulous 2 story plus rooftop abode with stellar 360° views of the mountains, ocean, channel islands and city.
About 30 people attended and were treated to many fine wines as well as delicious appetizers prepared by Michael Hutchings, one of Santa Barbara`s top chefs.
Archie McLaren, founder and chairman of the CCWC, gave a presentation about the history of and an overview for the upcoming Wine Classic and some of the beneficiaries, past and present.

2006 KISTLER KISTLER VINEYARD CHARDONNAY SONOMA VALLEY- delicious wine with great aromatics, texture, structure, balance and finish; after an inviting nose, it gave generous amounts of mineral infused orchard fruit and honeysuckle, was full bodied and stayed the course with a long, palate pleasing ending.
2010 DOMAINE de CHAVALIER BLANC PESSAC-LEOGNAN- this wonderful blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon was nicely balanced, had upfront minerality and citrus notes in the nose, a taste profile that included some oak laden citrus with lemon especially evident, apple and pear; it had a viscous texture that pleased the palate and a certain finesse that distinguished it from just any other blend of like and kind.
2014 AUBERT RITCHIE VINEYARD SONOMA COAST CHARDONNAY- serious acidity stands out in this fine Chard; it had a bounty of nice, fresh spicy stone fruit, a creamy mouthfeel and a long satisfying finish.
1999 DOMINIQUE LAURENT Rue de CHAUX NUITS-SAINT-GEORGES 1ER CRU- I got a huge amount of spicy red and black fruit in the nose followed by more of the same with lots of vanilla laced red cherry showing brightly; it was full on, had a lush mouthfeel and an expanded ending; it got better and better in the glass.
2007 COLGIN IX ESTATE RED WINE NAPA- 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot; milk chocolate and cigar box flavored black cherry and black currant was most prevalent in this huge, powerful wine; the tannins were somewhat softer than the last time I had this and made it much more approachable; it`s still a pup and has so much structure to carry this for decades down the line; this wine now is a tease as to what is forthcoming.
1966 CHATEAU HAUT-BRION PESSAC-LEOGNAN- this bottle was in great condition with only a slightly faded purple color, still quite viable tertiary dark fruit with especially black currant and plum notes and a soft and silky texture; it had amazing strength and vitality and completed the deal with a pleasant extended finish; I went back for one more sampling with similar delightful experiences.
This evening was a classy introduction for many local, affluent folks as to the quality of the CCWC event and as I understand it, it triggered some immediate response for some to sign up for some of the major attractions within the 5 day period.
