1975 dinner

I am turning 40 in November, but unfortunately 1975 was mostly a disappointing vintage, a part few exceptions.
Any suggestions for a 1975 dinner?
I am about to buy a Dom Perignon 1975 but have serious problem with reds. In order to avoid outrageous and unworthy expenses (my budget being max EUR 250-300 for the bottle, but only if really worthy it), what do you suggest? I'd like to opt for France or Italy and Bourgogne seems not an option. Maybe Gazin?
I'd like to avoid wines that are over their maturity.

Thanks for your question and post about 1975 Bordeaux.

The biggest issue you have with 40 year old wines is their provenance. On the bright side, there are fine 1975 Bordeaux wines, that are easily in your price range. Do you like 40 year old Champagne? I have friends that love old Champage, but it's quite different in character than young wines, in case you are not familiar with older Champagne.

I've never had 1975 Gazin, but it could be good. It's made to age and 1975 is fine for Pomerol.

You should use the search function for tasting notes and type in 1975 Bordeaux.

A few wines I've had I recall tasting and liking are 1975 Pichon Lalande, 1975 Montrose and 1975 Le Gay. Sauternes made very nice words, but that for dessert, not the center of your dinner.

I'll look for something from your list (good to know that even something from Medoc was good) or Gazin then, depending on availability.
Any suggestion on when to open? I am not familiar with wines of this age.

By the way, yes, I do love older Champagne thanks.

I could never recommend Jurançon to anyone... That is an acquired taste my friend, that I am never going to acquire. :)

I agree with you for 75 Climens. I recall the Les Carmes Haut Brion... I gave it 84 Pts, which for a 40 year old wine that sells for maybe $75 to $100, that's a good deal.

My guess is, Gruaud Larose could also be fine, better than Leoville Las Casses.

How are things with you? Are you excite to to taste 2015?

I rated Carmes Haut-Brion 1975 much higher than you, Jeff (91/100) - strong as a 1975 can be ......
Les Carmes Haut-Brion 1975 : 16,5/17 (hence, 91/100)
On découvre ici un vin rappelant un vieux Chinon. La construction est plus septentrionale, véloce, à l'acidité (ligérienne) soutenue mais bien intégrée.

I however know that this fresh expression might not be your style ... :razz:

Excited with Bordeaux 2015, the auction wines I recently had in Germany and the one I will soon taste in Barolo ...
Disappointments with my last panel of 50 Chianti (report to follow).

A summital Palmer 1990 last week (Rayas red 2001 and Chave red 1998 were great too).
For 1975, and at this age, the conservation of the bottles is a curcial issue, of course.

Clos Joliette in an unknown wonder ! These original wines age perfectly !

Not that I get to taste mature older Bordeaux wines all that often, as they are pricey bottles these days. 1975 Bordeaux has never really rocked me. The wines are so hard and tannic. I will look for the 1975 Pichon Lalande Howard suggested.
