Re: Some excellent/great wines since january 2016

A relative (and confirmad) disappointment with Rayas red 1998, which confirms that 1998 is not such a great vintage in Châteauneuf.

What do you think about this affirmation ?

Re: Ridge Monte Bello: Bordeaux equivalent?

Thanks Laurent for chiming in! Do you think that perhaps Leoville Barton might work? 2005, 2006, 2009 or 2010? It's probably close in price as well. Chase, have you had that wine? Maybe. I had a promising Léoville-Barton 2000 a few weeks ago : it still needs 10 years of cellaring ... Léoville-Poyfe...

Re: Ridge Monte Bello: Bordeaux equivalent?

That Monte Bello 1996 reminded me of Lafite-Rothschild 1996 (june 2001 tasting)

That Monte Bello 1998 reminded me of an excellent Pauillac 1998 (august 2006 tasting)

Re: Châteauneuf-du-Pape 1998 in 24 wines

Nice tasting Laurent! I think we agree on many of these wines. For me, most Chateauneuf du Pape are best between 8 and 12 years of age. 18 years is on the downhill slope for many wines in my view. Although, I have had nicer thoughts on Janasse VV and the Olivet Papet than you. Did you decant these ...

Re: Châteauneuf-du-Pape 1998 in 24 wines

Jeff,

As explained in introduction : "Entre autres causes, une aération de 5 heures (dans la bouteille rebouchée en position verticale) peut expliquer les variations dans les appréciations."

For the evening session I comment, the bottles have thus been opened 5 hours before (but no real decanting).

Blake,

I recently visited Nervi.
Excellent wines with the 2009 : Gattinara, Gattinara Valferrana, Gattinara Molsino.
Formerly tasted, very good Gattinara 2004 and Molsino 2004.

Re: Christmas wines (in french)

For Pomerol, the amount of cabernet-franc is determinant (in terms of texture). Texture is important. I cannot quantify it precisely (the texture of a Barolo - tannic - cannot directly be compared to the texture of a barbera - almost no tannins. The texture of Rayas is not the texture of a Chave Her...
