I agree that it is all about balance. A well made, balanced wine - even at a higher Alc point - will not taste hot. Which is a good thing since yeasts have gotten so much more efficient that a 24 brix Cabernet will get you over 14% alc.

The Joys of Bottling

There is an old adage that bottling is one of the riskiest days of the year for a winery. Nothing you do will make the wine any better, but a hundred different things can go wrong and, potentially, ruin the whole vintage. We bottled our 2008 Cabernet and Young Vines last week. Everything looked good...

A nice birthday dinner

at Tra Vigne in the Napa Valley for my wife: 2006 Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet this was showing very well, especially for an 06 with strong fruit flavors, but less than the ususal Leflaive strong 'pop corn' flavors. Very nice and quite easily obtainable 1991 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Roma...

Parker will be reviewing 2001 Napa Cabs this spring. As that was a vintage that supported more elegant wines, I will be very interested in his take on where they are now.

I think there is a difference between a couple bringing in a bottle of wine and a large group bringing in multiple bottles per person. We have found that in the first case, the Somm is often given the authority to waive corkage. In the second case, the restaurant really will have a lot of extra work...

I know this was not your question, but I had a bottle of '63 BV private reserve not too long ago and it was singing! Bet is cheaper than a Margaux.

Fame is fleeting. Many wineries that have consistently raised prices are sitting on inventory (a 4 letter word in the wine business). Not all, of course, but many. Low volume wineries can often afford to sit on inventory, but not forever. It will be interesting so see what happens, for example, to t...

I think that 'hype' is the relevant word here. Napa cabs, in particular, are made in very different styles, but hype seems to be one dimensional. Some people love the highly extracted, high alc wine, and others like the elegance which is more often associated with French wines. The hype often (not a...

For me it was the '74 Sterling Merlot that Ric Forman made. I remember staring at the glass and thinking 'now I get it'. Of course, if Garen has any more '59 La Tache in his cellar, I will happily change my vote.

As noted, when you don't have these wines side by side, it is hard to compare. However, I fondly remember 1941 Inglenook 1948 Cheval Blanc (yes, 48 - François and I disagreed) 1959 Lafite 2001 DRC RSV - for me the 01s are magical with just the right balance of secondary characteristics and fruit. 20...
