Ready to go, the wine is soft, refined, elegant and while it is not on the concentrated side, the fruit is polished, silky and complex. Drink over the next decade for maximum enjoyment.

With light bricking to the color, the medium/full bodied, elegant charmer, serves up its tobacco leaf, Asian spice box, cedar, cherry and leafy forest scents with ease. The wine is soft and silky, with elements of green notes on the backend, of the earthy, sweet, red fruit finish. There is no real hurry to drink this, but I doubt there is any reason to hope for further development.

Full mature, medium bodied and elegant, this is more interesting on the nose, with its tobacco, floral, truffle, cherry and forest floor perfume, than on the palate, as it's on the lighter side for Margaux. Lots of freshness, but lacking the depth and luxurious textures found in the best vintages, there is still a lot to like here. But it is not going to get much better from here. If you have a bottle, pop a cork.

Medium bodied, lighter style of Margaux that is drinking nicely today. The texture is soft, the fruit is close to crispy, finishing with some dryness in the tannins coupled with herbal notes and cassis. This is not worth the money it trades for today.

Fully mature, with a nose filled with tobacco, earth, cherries, forest floor and cigar box notes, the wine is soft, silky and polished. But there is a lack of depth and length that keep this refined, elegant Margaux from being exciting. Don't get me wrong, this is a good wine that I liked. But it needed to be a wine I loved...

Rife with chocolate, plum, tobacco, earth, floral, cassis, spice and black cherry aromas. Elegant, rich, sensuous textures and a luscious cassis and dark berry finish led me to believe it was a very good Pomerol. When it turned out to be 1989 Chateau Margaux, I was happy because the wine has gained complexity and depth over the past several years. As good as this is drinking now, it's only going to get better.

Tobacco, spice, black cherry, blackberry, and truffles with hints of floral notes made up the complex perfume. The wine displays a soft texture, but it lacks the concentration found in the top years. The wine finishes with notes of ripe black fruit and plums. This is a finesse style of Margaux that is maturing early.

When to Drink Chateau Margaux, Anticipated Maturity, Decanting Time

Chateau Margaux is not a wine to drink on the young side. The wine is usually far too tannic, powerful, and reserved during its youth. Young vintages can be decanted for an average of 3-6 hours, give or take. This allows the wine to soften and open its perfume. Older vintages might need very little decanting, just enough to remove the sediment.

Chateau Margaux is usually better with at least 15 years of bottle age. Of course, that can vary slightly, depending on the vintage character. Chateau Margaux offers its best drinking and should reach peak maturity between 18 and 60 years of age after the vintage.

Serving Chateau Margaux with Wine, Food, Pairings

Chateau Margaux is best served at 15.5 degrees Celsius, 60 degrees Fahrenheit. The cool, almost cellar temperature gives the wine more freshness and lift.

Chateau Margaux is best paired with all types of classic meat dishes, veal, pork, beef, lamb, duck, game, roast chicken, roasted, braised, and grilled dishes. Chateau Margaux is also good when matched with Asian dishes, rich fish courses like tuna, mushrooms, and pasta.

The white wine of Chateau Margaux, Pavillon Blanc can be paired perfectly with all types of seafood, shellfish, sushi, sashimi, veal, chicken, pork, and assorted cheeses.
