On the palate, the wine is silky, sensuous, rich, and almost viscous. The fruit comes in layers, and does not stop building in intensity. The wine is poised between weight and lift, with an energetic finish delivering a powerful wall of cashmere-textured, red and black fruits that hold your focus for at least 60 seconds. This is a unique style for Chateau Margaux that is difficult to compare with previous vintages due to its levels of ABV and concentration. But I love it! The wine blends 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc. All the Petit Verdot was placed into Pavillon Rouge. 14.6% ABV, is the highest ABV in the history of the estate. 3.61 pH. Yields were barely 25 hectoliters per hectare. The Grand Vin was produced using only 40% of the harvest. More time could soften the wine, but I am not willing to bet the farm on it. If you were lucky like me and bought the wine as a future in 2003 for about $80 US dollars, you did great. Medium bodied and soft textured, the tired wine offered, light, silky cherries in the finish. Just a few weeks shy of its 90'th birthday, this bottle was incredible! The wine had intensity, concentrated and slightly tough or austere tannins, but the nose, with its floral, sweet, cherry pipe tobacco, incense, wet earth, cedar and herb scents knocked me out. Masculine, but regal, the wine didn't move much in the glass, it just softened a bit and allowed more of the sweet, red fruits to shine through the advanced patina of age. 4,641 Views Tasted Nov 10, 2017Red, brown hue. But the texture showed class and the red fruits you did find had a softness to them, even though the flavors moved from red to tart. Truffles, tobacco, floral, earth, sweet cherry and cedar aromatics bathed your nose. The wine offered a unique sensation, perfectly combining elegance, concentration and a light touch. Silk, satin and velvet textures played in your mouth, while ripe, spicy cherries, pipe tobacco, fresh strawberry and cassis flavors lingered on your palate. Everything was as it should be. Rust with orange in color, the wine offers. Tobacco, earth, orange peel, cranberry, smoke, charcoal with a lot of VA. Thin, bright, acidic, sharp and dry cherry in the finish. Who cares? Keeping things in the proper perspective, that was the year Lizze Borden chopped up her family with an ax, Thomas Edison began making silent movies, Grover Cleveland was president and Hawaii still had a queen! I’m tasting bottled history with this wine as it’s almost 120 years old! It’s an honor and privilege to hold the bottle, swirl and sip a wine that was made two centuries ago. The color of tea, potent, earthy, truffle, spice, tea, leather and tobacco notes were only the first scents to arrive.
