Fully mature, perfectly aged claret, with a focus on its smoky, tobacco and cherry aromatics, over the light cherry, pipe tobacco palate presence. Drink up.

Medium bodied, elegant, soft and incredibly smoky, the wine reminded of walking into a cigar store. Toss in fresh, sweet cherries and spill wet, earth on the floor and you get an idea of what this wine charmer is like. This is not going to improve. This bottle was probably better than most examples as I purchased it from the original owner. Not decanted. My guess is, the wine was better years ago. If you have a bottle, pop that cork.

Earthy, forest notes, black fruit and complex spices made a beautiful perfume. But, the finish to me was short and light.

When to Drink Chateau La Mission Haut Brion, Anticipated Maturity, Decanting Time

Chateau La Mission Haut Brion needs as long as 15-25 years in the best years until it truly offers its best drinking experiences. Young vintages can be decanted for 3-4 hours or more. This allows the wine to soften and open its perfume.

Older vintages might need very little decanting, just enough to remove the sediment. Chateau La Mission Haut Brion offers its best drinking and should reach peak maturity between 15-60 years of age after the vintage.
