One of the best things about starting to date someone new is sharing wines with them for the first time and discovering the types of wines and styles they enjoy most. And of course turning them into a hopeless Bordeaux wine lover! With that in mind, we opened two Bordeaux wines from 1989, one from each bank to compare.

And for those of you thinking I should have added a Pessac Leognan to mix and made it a trio, the only Graves I have from 1989 is Haut Brion and La Mission Haut Brion.;)

1989 La Conseillante - Sting might have sang about a message in a bottle, but this wine was all about sex in a bottle. Filled with elegant, liquid silk and polished velvet textures, coupled with beguiling aromas of violets, chocolate, truffle, black cherry, tobacco, molasses and brown sugar, this decadent charmer hits all the right notes. The wine finishes with chocolate covered blackberries and spicy plums. This is close to full maturity. There is no reason to hold it any longer. While it might gain in aromatics, the sensuous textures could subside. 97 Pts

1989 Pichon Lalande - It's always a nice surprise when a bottle performs better than you expected. Tobacco, cassis, truffle, earth, spice, cedar, green olive tapenade and roses make up the complex perfume. On the palate, this Bordeaux wine feels like pure silk and velvet. The long, ripe dark berry finish lasts at least 40 seconds. Note to self, drink more Pichon Lalande. 95 Pts

Poor you, only HB and La Mission HB of 89 :)

I have two bottles of Pichon Lalande 89 somewhere in my cellar, I'm looking forward to open them.

Yum! Although I've never managed to convert my girlfriend to a hopeless Bordeaux lover... She's still at a Riesling phase, and at the most Pinot (from Oregon, NOT Burgundy). Frustrated, and apprently dating a new girl would not be a viable option for me... lol.

That is probably the best (or worst) sign of being a wine nerd/geek if you have to change your girl/boyfriend according to their taste in wine :) But it's interesting, being single, if on a first date it turned out that my date didn't like Bordeaux or Mosel wines, would I then go on?

Would not mind being single again:) Married for longer than i care to remember and my missus and I do not like the same style of wine. She loves big fruity wines,I love mature wine such as the two 89 you tasted Jeff. One good thing though,is that I get to drink the whole bottle!!
Still have about 10 bottles of the 89 La Con and have recently being buying the 01 and 04.

Hi Lisa... You've never tasted a Bordeaux? We have to fix that right away! I can give a lot of good tips on very nice Bordeaux that is not too expensive. I am sure others can chime in as well. If you like, to make sure you get several different opinons, would you like to start a thread asking for tips on what Bordeaux wine you should taste for your first experience?

It's quite strange that so many couples prefer different wines, one should think that when sharing bottles for years, the taste for wine would get more alike, like the meal, or do people cook different meals as well?

I'm a huge fan of both these wines, with a preference for La Conseillante. Wish I had more...

Keith, I hope your wife doesn't read this forum! :)
