Chateau Mouton Rothschild History, Overview

The start of the famous Rothschild family begins in 1744, with the birth of Amschel Meyer. Amschel Meyer began creating his fortune while working as a merchant at “zum Roten Schild,” which eventually became the family name of Rothschild.

In 1798 his sons were sent to various cities to create their fortunes as well. Needless to say, his sons all prospered as did their children in turn. This eventually led to their desire to own a chateau in Bordeaux. Nathaniel de Rothschild set his eyes on Chateau Brane Mouton.

Chateau Brane Mouton took its name from Joseph de Brane, who bought the estate in 1720 from Nicolas-Alexandre de Segur. The de Segur family owned and created several legendary Bordeaux estates including Chateau Calon Segur, which still bears their name, and of course Chateau Latour and what later became Chateau Lafite Rothschild!

The new owner, Joseph de Brane, (who also owned Brane Cantenac in Margaux) combined his last name with Mouton, (which is translated into a small hill) and Chateau Brane-Mouton was born.

The official birth of what we know as Chateau Mouton Rothschild took place in 1853 when Nathaniel de Rothschild purchased Brane Mouton from Isaac Thuret. Because the estate had not been maintained, the vineyards required extensive replanting and a new chateau was required. Isaac Thuret sold the property for less than he paid for it 23 years earlier.

Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, an English member of the Rothschild family, followed the custom of the day, renaming the property using his name along with a portion of the original name, and Chateau Mouton Rothschild was born.

In 1868, James Rothschild, another member of the Rothschild family purchased Chateau Lafite. The 5 pointed crests featured on the label of the Rothschild family wines are to remember the 5 sons of the first generation of the Rothschild family.

James Rothschild never visited Chateau Mouton Rothschild in his lifetime. The estate was simply an investment. It took the next generation until a member of the family visited and lived at Chateau Mouton Rothschild.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild The Modern Era

It can be argued that the modern age of Chateau Mouton Rothschild, along with the modernization of the entire Bordeaux wine region began at the same time. In terms of time, it was quite recent. Especially when compared to the history of the appellation. In fact, it took place less than one hundred years ago.

Both events started when the young Baron Philippe Rothschild, who was only 20 years old at the time, gained control of Chateau Mouton Rothschild. The Baron completely changed how Bordeaux wine was produced and sold.

Starting in 1922, due to the Baron’s changes at Chateau Mouton Rothschild, many of the methods and techniques initiated by the Baron were seen as radical in the 1920s. However, today, most are still practiced by all the top producers of Bordeaux wine today!

The Left Bank property was already world-famous for its wines by this time. But some people, especially the young Baron Philippe Rothschild knew the estate could produce better wine. He was sure Chateau Mouton was as good as any of the First Growth wines from the Medoc.

In the original 1855 Classification, Chateau Mouton Rothschild earned Second Growth status. He made it his mission to earn the coveted First Growth status for Mouton Rothschild.

While that will always be a feather in the cap of Mouton Rothschild, perhaps even more important is that Chateau Mouton Rothschild is the only First Growth still in the same families’ hands since the historic 1855 classification.

Baron Philippe Rothschild Changes Bordeaux

What the Baron accomplished at Mouton Rothschild in only two years is nothing short of amazing. The Baron was the first Bordeaux owner to insist on bottling all his wine at their estate. At the time this was considered to be an unusual idea. This allowed total control over the wine he sold from Mouton Rothschild.

Prior to that point, chateaux either bottled their wine or sold it in the barrel to negociants, who bottled and sold the wine. The more common practice was to sell the wine in barrel to negociants.

Keep in mind, at the time, bottling at the property was a revolutionary concept. To enhance the start of bottling at the chateau in customers’ minds, Baron Philippe Rothschild hired the Cubist artist Jean Carlu to create a special label for the 1924 Chateau Mouton Rothschild label.

This was the precursor to now-famous artist-designed labels for the bottles which began in 1945. The new practice of bottling their own wine created a need for more storage at the property. In 1926, the Baron constructed the famous “Grand Chai” of Mouton Rothschild.

In 1933, The Baron purchased a neighboring vineyard, Chateau Mouton d’Armailhacq, a Fifth Growth. The property was renamed Chateau d’Armailhac in 1989 by his wife, the Baroness Philippine. Part of the reason for the purchase was that the estate came with a negociant firm which eventually became known as “Baron Philippe de Rothschild S.A.”

In 1970 Baron Rothschild added to Fifth Growth to their holdings in Pauillac when they purchased Chateau Clerc Milon, which is also located not far from the vineyards of Mouton Rothschild.

At the same time, Baron Philippe Rothschild was adding to his holdings in Pauillac, he created another important innovation for the Bordeaux industry. He was the first to create a branded wine that would be known all over the world that could be sold for a price every consumer could afford.

The genesis behind what would become Mouton Cadet took place in the 1930s, following 3 extremely poor vintages. At the time Mouton Cadet was first produced, it was actually used as the name for the second wine of Chateau Mouton Rothschild as a way to increase the quality of the Grand Vin.

The Baron chose the name Mouton Cadet, roughly translated to the “Youngest brother of Mouton,” because those 3 vintages were difficult and unable to produce much wine at the level expected from Chateau Mouton Rothschild. That wine was then sold under the name of Mouton Cadet.

That tradition caught on and by the mid-1950’s the wine had turned into the world’s most popular branded, inexpensive Bordeaux wine.

Mouton Rothschild Artist Designed Labels

The now-famous series of labels portrayed on the labels for Mouton Rothschild started in 1945. The debut label was perfect for the times and the wine. The image The Baron chose was a symbol celebrating the Liberation of France.

With the famous “V” for Victory label, a tradition was born! From that point on, each label vintage was based on an original work of art created specifically for this purpose by famous artists: Salvador Dali, Miro, Chagall, Braque, Picasso, Warhol, Bacon, Balthus, Tàpies, David Hockney, and a myriad of famous artists have contributed to this tradition.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild Elevated to First Growth Status

Mouton Rothschild was always a First Growth vineyard in the eyes of the Baron. However, it was considered a Second Growth when the Classification took place in 1855. After existing for over 100 years without a single change, nobody believed the Classification would ever be modified.

That is nobody except Baron Philippe. He became the only person to succeed in changing the 1855 classification: Château Mouton Rothschild became officially a “Premier Cru Classé” (First Classified Growth) starting with the 1973 vintage.

For this momentous occasion, the front label for 1973 Chateau Mouton Rothschild boasted…

“Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change”.
First I am, second I was, I Mouton do not change.

Baroness Philippine de Rothschild Influences Mouton Rothschild

In 1988, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, the daughter of the Baron, who had been associated with her father’s work for some time, succeeded her father who passed away that year.

The Baroness began producing white wine in 1991, Aile d’Argent, which caused quite a stir at the time.

Her next major decision was to bring in Philippe Dhalluin, who was previously the director of Chateau Branaire Ducru in St. Julien. Philippe Dhalluin stayed with Mouton Rothschild until 2020.

In 2006, Philippine de Rothschild added to their holdings with the purchase of 24 hectares of vines Chateau Colombier Monpelou. From that point forward, it is expected that most of those vines will be used to produce Chateau d’Armailhac.

Under the direction of the Baroness, Chateau Mouton Rothschild underwent a multi-year, complete renovation of the winery. The construction was completed in 2013. The new cellars were designed by the team of the noted Architect, Bernard Mazieres, and theatrical designer Richard Peduzzi.

The renovations were extensive and included an entirely new, state of the art, gravity fed, vinification cellar. One of the unique creations was the invention of windows on the large, oak, fermentation vats. These thick glass windows allow the wine maker to peer into the vat from the top to the bottom.

From this viewpoint, the winemaker can now see inside each vat during the fermentation process, allowing them to know what is taking place during the extraction, while watching the skins and juice interact. If a pump over is needed and more. It places you as close as you can get inside the vinification process!

The famous wine museum of Mouton Rothschild, as well as the art galleries, were entirely renovated as well. The new cellars, which are estimated to have cost more than 25 million Euros were completed in time for the 2013 harvest at Mouton Rothschild.

Baroness Philippine Rothschild passed away at 80 years of age, August 22, 2014. She is survived by her three children, Camille Sereys de Rothschild born in 1961, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild born in 1963, and Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild, born in 1971. In October 2014, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild, the eldest son of Baroness Philippine Rothschild and her first husband, Jacques Sereys, was named as the new president of Chateau Mouton Rothschild.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild Vineyards, Terroir, Grapes, Winemaking

The 83-hectare vineyard of Chateau Mouton Rothschild is planted to 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. This shows a slight change in the vineyard since the mid 1990s marked by a moderate reduction in the Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, along with a small increase in the Merlot.

Interestingly, over the years, due to replanting, the vineyard makeup and blends have varied more than usual over a 10 year period starting in 2004. For example, Petit Verdot was not used in the blend for Mouton Rothschild from 2004 until 2015.

Cabernet Franc was not placed in the blend between 2006 and 2010. The vineyard has a terroir filled with gravel, rocks, sand, clay and limestone soils.

The Mouton Rothschild vineyard is old, with vines averaging 50 years of age. However, they have old vines. Some parcels have vines that were planted more than 130 years ago! The oldest vines were cultivated in 1890, making them some of the oldest active vines in all of Bordeaux. When their old vines die, they are replaced with clones from the estate’s massal selection program.

The vineyards are planted to a vine density of 10,000 vines per hectare. The percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon remains high, as it’s perfect for the gravel terroir of Mouton Rothschild.

The vineyard of Mouton Rothschild is situated on the “Mouton Plateau,” which is also referred to as the Grand Plateau. The vast majority of the Chateau Mouton Rothschild vineyard is in one large block of vines. The vines here enjoy a southern exposure. Its most famous neighbor, Chateau Lafite Rothschild is just due north.

Chateau Pontet Canet is only across the road. The terroir consists of deep gravel, rocks, stones, and sand over limestone soils. Under the topsoil, you find clay, marl, and more limestone with sand and iron.

It is the incredible concentration of the gravel in the soils that gives Mouton Rothschild its unique character. Here, you find almost no clay, the terroir is close to 100% pure gravel. The gravel goes down over 5 meters below the surface in some parts of the vineyard.

Mouton as you may know is a small hill. There are points in the vineyard that rise almost 29 meters above sea level offering important, natural drainage making the peak elevations at Mouton Rothschild among the highest in Pauillac.

In the Medoc, Cabernet Sauvignon was not always the most widely planted grape variety. In fact, Chateau Mouton Rothschild was the first important chateau to begin planting a large percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in their vineyards. The plantings were started by Baron Hector de Branne and his son Jacques Maxime de Branne who owned the chateau in the 1800s.

For several years during the 1800s, vintages of Brane Mouton were even reported to have been produced from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon in some vintages! While Mouton Rothschild remains mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, it is the blend that creates the unique style and character of their wine.

Vineyard Management at Mouton Rothschild

At Mouton Rothschild, they have a unique, labor-intensive method of vineyard management practices. For the vines and different parcels, the same people are responsible for the same parcels every year, under the supervision of a specific vine manager. After pruning, the vines are tied.

In the spring the young shoots are trained between the wires to allow ample space for the tractors to work the soil without harming the vines. Green harvesting is practiced. In select years the crop may be thinned in July to help to eliminate unripe clusters which reduce yields and concentrates the grapes.

mouton-rothschild-barrel-cellars

Picking is done entirely by hand. The grapes are collected in 12-kilo open baskets. The young vines are harvested first and go through alcoholic fermentation separately. Prior to destemming, the grapes are again sorted by hand with a berry by berry selection.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild Winemaking

To produce the wine of Chateau Mouton Rothschild, the wine is vinified in 64 large, temperature-controlled wood, 225 hectoliter vats. Malolactic fermentation takes place in tank.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild is always aged in 100% new, French oak barrels for an average of 19 to 22 months.

There is a second wine, Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild which made its debut in 1993. Le Petit Mouton takes its name from the official residence of the Baroness and her family, which is a small house located next to the chateau that is known as Petit Mouton. There is also a third wine, sold as Baron Nathaniel.

Mouton Rothschild Aile d’Argent White Bordeaux Wine

Mouton Rothschild also makes a dry, white Bordeaux wine, Aile d’Argent, from a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Muscadelle, planted in a small 4.5 hectare parcel of vines. Sold as a Bordeaux Blanc, the wine made its debut in 1991.

Aile d’Argent is one of the few white Bordeaux wines that does conduct malolactic fermentation. Although that process is limited to an average of only 20% of their wine.

Since the arrival of Philippe Dhalluin, the number of cases being produced of the Grand Vin continues to decrease, while the quality of the wine being made increases. As an example, previously, it was not unheard of for the estate to release 25,000 cases to as many as 30,000 cases of Mouton Rothschild.

Mouton Rothschild new cellars

The percentage of the crop used for Mouton Rothschild is now closer to 50% on average, which means they produce an average of 20,000 cases of Chateau Mouton Rothschild or less per vintage. To give you a point of comparison, until the 2000 vintage, it was common for Mouton Rothschild to produce its Grand Vin from an average of 80% to 85% of the harvest.

Today, that is not what takes place. This is clearly seen in the increased quality of the wine being produced today, which continues to improve. In 2006, 2009, 2010 and 2014 Mouton Rothschild is clearly on contention for having produced the wine of the vintage. I expect that trend to continue.

The best vintages of Chateau Mouton Rothschild are: 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2012, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2006, 2005, 2003, 2000, 1996, 1995, 1986, 1985, 1983, 1982, 1961, 1959, 1955, 1953, 1949, 1948, 1945, 1929, 1928 and 1900. As you can see, there is an incredible track record for Chateau Mouton Rothschild as one of the consistent, and long lived wines in all of Bordeaux!

Character and Style of Chateau Mouton Rothschild Wine

Mouton Rothschild is the most flamboyant style of wine of all the First Growths. With Asian spices, opulent textures, an exotic personality and the ability to age and evolve for decades. The wine offers incredible depth and concentration as well as balance, length and purity. Chateau Mouton Rothschild is not only one of the finest Bordeaux wines, but it is also one of the world’s great wines.

When to Drink Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Anticipated Maturity, Decanting Time

Chateau Mouton Rothschild is not a wine to drink on the young side. The wine is usually far too tannic, concentrated, and reserved during its youth. Young vintages can be decanted for an average of 3-6 hours, give or take. This allows the wine to soften and open its perfume. Older vintages might need very little decanting, just enough to remove the sediment.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild is usually better with at least 15 years of bottle age. Of course, that can vary slightly, depending on the vintage character. Chateau Latour offers its best drinking and should reach peak maturity between 18 and 60 years of age after the vintage.

Serving Chateau Mouton Rothschild with Wine and Food Pairings

Chateau Mouton Rothschild is best served at 15.5 degrees Celsius, 60 degrees Fahrenheit. The cool, almost cellar temperature gives the wine more freshness and lift.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild is best paired with all types of classic meat dishes, veal, pork, beef, lamb, duck, game, roast chicken, roasted, braised, and grilled dishes. Chateau Mouton Rothschild is also good when matched with Asian dishes, Chinese food, rich fish courses like tuna, salmon, mushrooms, and pasta.

Aile d’Argent, the white wine of Mouton Rothschild with wine and food matches are perfect for the table. Aile d’Argent is best paired with all types of seafood, sushi, sashimi, crab, lobster, chicken, veal, pork, and a myriad of different cheeses.

Aside from their three Classified estates in Bordeaux, the company also produces wines in the Napa Valley with Opus One, in Limoux with Domaine de Baron’arques, and in Chile, where the Rothschild family formed a partnership with Concha y Toro in Chile to create Almaviva.

When added to all their branded and negociant wines, like Mouton Cadet, in total, the company sells more than $350,000,000 worth of wine each year! Part of the reason for their success in creating an international brand has to do with their nonstop marketing all over the world.

In fact, Chateau Mouton Rothschild was one of the first 1855 Classified chateau to begin marketing in China. To further their connection to the country of China, for the 2008 vintage, Chateau Mouton Rothschild chose Xu Le, the Chinese-born artist to design their label.

Dark in color, and equally dark in fruit, this is a flamboyant, ostentatious, opulent, velvet-textured Mouton that is on the exotic side. Perhaps, this is a modern version of the 1982? The wine exudes its blackberry, boysenberry, chocolate, Asian spice, tobacco leaf, licorice, smoke, and cigar wrapper notes in the perfume. On the palate, the wine is incredibly dense. There is so much fruit, you wonder if it would be better eating this with a spoon, before taking another sip? The finish is rich, intense, velvety, long, and close to seamless, holding court for over 50 seconds. I love the touch of spice that shines before the wine fades from your palate. The wine blends 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Merlot. 14% ABV, 3.89 pH. The harvest took place September 1 - September 26. Yields were 32 hectoliters per hectare. Only 49% of the harvest was used to produce the Grand Vin. Drink from 2030-2065. 98-100 Pts.

Deep garnet with purple accents around the rim. Asian spice, cedar, tobacco leaf, cocoa, licorice, flowers and blackberries, with black cherry and light notes of espresso show up with ease on the nose. The wine is full-bodied, with incredible polish, plushness and supple textures, yet it remains classic in style and character. Balanced on the corners of freshness, length, character and complexity. This is not a Mouton Rothschild that is about concentration, flamboyance and power. Instead it is focused on its purity, energy and refined, silky tannins. It is also not a vintage that will demand decades to develop into maturity. It should be gorgeous to drink with perhaps a decade of age, and will evolve for at least 2-3 decades after that with ease. The wine blends 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc, 13.1% ABV. The harvest took place September 25, finishing October 6. Drink from 2030-2060. 95-97

Elegant, sophisticated, long, clean and expansive, this is showing just great due to all its layers of perfectly ripe, red fruits, silky tannins, length and freshness. Mouton Rothschild hasn't skipped a beat since the sublime 2009 vintage! 2019 continues their winning streak with one of the wines of the vintage. Almost opaque in color, the nose resonates with its showy display of Asian spices, cigar wrapper, fresh herbs, cigar box, blackberries, crushed stone and cassis. Full-bodied, richly concentrated, opulent, and equally refined, the multi-layered display of flawlessly ripe berries, elegant textures, balance, freshness and flamboyance is what the great vintages of Mouton are all about. The finish crosses the 60 second mark with ease. Drink from 2035-2070.

Deeply colored, the intoxicating, aromatic profile provides essences of mint, Asian spice, blackberry, cassis, cigar box, smoke and lead pencil. On the palate, the wine is rich, lush, round, full-bodied and concentrated, with layers of lusciously textured, ripe, sweet, fresh, pure dark red pit fruits and blackberries. Classically styled, but classic in a good way, the wine is showy, but not flamboyant. The finish here just keeps on going. With a high proportion of Cabernet in the blend, the wine is produced from 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, reaching 13.5 ABV. The harvest took place September 18-October 5. The Grand Vin was produced from 51% of the crop with yields of only 40 hectoliters per hectare. 98-100 Pts

This is so good, it is difficult to believe, that it is only a second wine. Texturally, the wine is rich, plush, polished elegant and fresh. You find layers of blackberry, currants and cassis paired with wet earth, flowers and tobacco leaf with a cool hint of spice on the nose and palate. The finish steals the show with its layers of ripe, sweet, lusciously textured black and red fruits. The wine can be enjoyed in its youth, but patience will be rewarded with all of its yet to come secondary nuances. Drink from 2025-2042.

Dark red ink in color, the wine exudes Asian spice, espresso, smoke, cigar box, walnuts, cocoa, blackberry and red currant aromas. If you can pull yourself away from seeking additional nuances in the perfume, the wine hits your palate with waves of sensuous, decadent, velvety, dark red fruits and spice that clock in at over 60 seconds. Think of 2018 as a better version of 2009, with more concentration, silkier tannins, additional levels of purity and opulence. Even with all this voluptuousness, the wine is energetic and intense. The blend comes from 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, 13.8% ABV.

Opaque in color, the purple black hue is gorgeous. The perfume with its sea salt, lead pencil, blackberry liqueur, black currants, tobacco, spice and smoke is a knockout! That will keep you busy enough but it is on the palate where you'll really experience the wine as it hits and coats every nook and cranny in your mouth. Is Le Petit Mouton the best second wine from Bordeaux today? After tasting the 2018, it is a distinct possibility. Dark in color, the nose jumps with 5 spice, currants, smoke, blackberries and light oak aromas. Silky, lush and polished with layers of sweet, ripe, fresh, round red fruits that build and linger. Disarmingly easy to taste, this has the ability to age for at least two decades. Blended using 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc, reaching 14% ABV, part of the reason the wine feels so rich that for the first time, the wine was aged in 100% new, French oak barrels, instead of closer to 50%.

The nose can only be described as black currant liqueur. From there you find 5 spice, blackberry and wild cherry. The barrel aging has really concentrated this wine. Unctuous, intense, concentrated and flat out, delicious. It is not often Pauillac is described as decadent. But that is exactly what takes place here. The wine covers every taste receptor on your palate. If you have the chance to taste this elixir, don't pass on it. If you have the disposable income to lay this incredible wine down, do it,. As this is going to be impossibly expensive as it matures.

Rich, full-bodied, concentrated and deep, it takes effort to step inside the wine, as I suspect it's about the tighten up and go to sleep for at least a decade or so. Still, it is impossible not to find the layers of ripe, lush, powerful, sweet, dark red fruits that fill your palate from start to finish. Texturally, this is exciting and the finish feels just great as the wine builds and expands. This is contender for one of the wines of the vintage.

The intoxicating nose of smoke, cigar box, wet forest floor, cassis and black fruits is really there. Classic in style, combining ripe, but firm tannins, full bodied and finishing with a concentrated bite of sweet, black currants, Cuban cigars and exotic spices, this will require at least a decade, and perhaps two, to develop to its full potential. The wine was produced from blending 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc. In time, if this improves as I suspect it might, it could add another Point or so, as it\'s really a very good example of Mouton Rothschild.

Cassis, blackberry, tobacco and smoky aromas are paired perfectly with ripe, soft tannins and juicy cassis, in the medium/full bodied finish. This can definitely benefit from aging. Truffle, forest floor, cigar box, cedar chest and cassis are easy to find on the nose. Medium/full bodied, elegant, charming and fresh, give this perhaps 4-5 years and you'll have a quite nice, albeit lighter style of Mouton Rothschild to enjoy for the next decade and probably longer. Made using a blend of 889% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc, the fruit was picked from September 30 to October 9.

Hints of vanilla bean, tobacco, cassis, blackberry and truffle lead to a medium/full bodied-wine with cassis, blackberry and soft, polished tannins. The wine should improve and add more depth with a few years of aging. From 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc, the yields were 30.1 hectoliters per hectare. Less than 50% of the harvest was placed in the Grand Vin. Due to the lighter style of the vintage, the wine was aged using only 80%, new French oak barrels, instead of 100% new oak. 2013 Mouton also represents the smallest amount of cases produced at Mouton Rothschild since 1969. Interestingly, the Merlot at Mouton Rothschild went through veraison after the Cabernet Sauvignon for the first time in Philippe Dhalluin’s memory. 93-94 Pts

Cassis and gravel in the nose, that become further complicated with notes of cedar wood, tobacco, black raspberry and cigar box accents. Incredible in every sense of the word, this has everything you could want in a Pauillac and from Mouton Rothschild. Just as good, but different in style from the opulence found in the 2009, here you find incredible levels of intensity, density, richness, vibrancy and lift. The wall of fruit is perfectly ripe, expressing its purity along with crushed rocks, flowers, spice box, lead pencil, currants, cassis, blackberries, and Cuban cigars. The racy finish is seamless and crosses the 60-second mark with ease. This is not a wine for today. This is for the future. Your children can enjoy it at maturity. Drink from 2030-2080.

Close to perfect, this is stunning. Rich, full-bodied, opulent, fresh, long and with a beautiful purity of fruit, this is an exciting wine that pleases your palate and senses. The fruit has energy, length and palate coating levels of extract. The texture combines power and silky tannins and the finish pushes past the 60-second mark! Just a baby, give this until the wine hits its 20th birthday and I am sure if well-stored this can easily go another 40-50 years past that. This is everything a great Pauillac and Mouton should be.

Truffles, wet earth, tobacco wrapper, forest floor and leafy notes add to the nuances. Full bodied, firm, tannic and classically styled, the wine is still austere. There is plenty of fruit buried below the wall of tannins, but you will need time for the tannins to subside. This will take at least 10-15 more years before it is civilized.

The rounded tannins promote the opulent, rich style. The 08 is a classic Mouton, less exotic than some earlier vintages. But it’s going to win a lot of fans. Made from blending 83% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17% Merlot, the late harvest was relatively quick, taking place between October 2 and October 15. 92-95 Pts

Strict, a bit firm and under-ripe, there is a distinctive, herbal edge to the crisp red fruits and firm tannins on the palate. With 94% Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, this is the highest percentage of Cabernet used in any vintage of Le Petit Mouton.

Lacking the depth and opulence found in the best years, the wine exchanges concentration and complexity for a medium bodied, correct, early drinking Pauillac, with a real Bordeaux character. At 10, this is already a charmer. However, it is a not a wine for extended cellaring. If you have a bottle, pop a cork over the next 3-8 years, to get the most out of the wine.

Reticent, it takes air, coaxing and patience before the bright, fresh, vibrant red fruits begin to show, Classic, refined, and on the cassis, red plum side of the fruit range, there is a firmness to the tannins that will take time to resolve. In a decade, this is probably going to score much higher. Patience is required here.

Don't let the lightening of color around the edge fool you into thinking this ready to drink. The nose is only now starting to show its tobacco, cigar box, forest floor, exotic spice and dark fruit characteristics. Full bodied, dense and powerful, while there is still a wealth of tannin present, the tannins are ripe. The fruit is sweet, warm and spicy. There is a beauty to the cherry liqueur and kirsch flavors in the supple textured finish. If you like your wines young, or have no patience, you can open a bottle. But if you have a cold cellar, and can manage to wait 5-10 more years, this will be a stunner. Produced from a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Merlot, the harvest took place starting September 20 and finished October 5.

Young, OK, very young, but there is a lot to like here, with its fragrant nose of cassis, lead pencil, earth, spice, tobacco and blackberry filled perfume. Opulent, silky, round and concentrated, give it 10 more years to come around and it should score even better. At least I hope so. I'm sitting on my bottles patiently.

2006 Mouton Rothschild is the wine of the vintage. It’s only 4 years old, and its potential is already clearly evident. The best wines offer a uniqueness of character and 2006 Mouton has that in spades! The aromatics explode from the glass. The complex perfume is filled with primary scents of smoke, caramel, tar, espresso, coffee, chocolate, spicy black cherry and cassis. This dense wine is extremely rich and offers multiple layers of fruit and freshness. It coats your palate with a finish that lasts close to 60 seconds! The fruit displays an intense purity that is hard to find. Consumers wanting to own a great vintage of Mouton should be laying down the 2006. In my opinion, in the years to come, this will be considered one of the legendary vintages of Mouton Rothschild. While it’s expensive, it sells for less than other recent vintages like 2000, 2005 and 2009 and this is a better wine! 99 Pts

This is so young. Yet, if you look inside with just a bit of effort, the wine is fabulous with unlimited potential. Concentrated, full, rich and with serious depth of flavor, the wine balances its naturally opulent nature with the structure to age, a wall of ripe tannin and endless waves of juicy, ripe, fresh, pure cassis. Patience is warranted. So give it 15 years and enjoy it over the next 50!

Still quite youthful, even though it lacks the concentration and flamboyance, the wine still has plenty to offer. Medium/full-bodied, the wine focuses on cedar, tobacco leaf, red currants and forest floor notes in the perfume, the nose. Fresh, bright red fruits and spice box notes on the soft refined palate complete the finish. The wine needs another 5 years n the cellar before it moves completely into its secondary stage.

In a vintage that produced several legendary wines from the Northern Medoc, the 2003 Mouton Rothschild is a bit of a disappointment. From a blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, the wine is already starting to open up, which is a rarity for Mouton, a wine that's known for often taking decades to mature. Tobacco, earth, Asian spice, creme de cassis, blueberry, smoke, licorice and gravel scents produce the perfume. Soft and opulent in texture, with a flamboyant personality, the wine is surprisingly low in ABV for the vintage at 12.9%. It lacks that special something found in the top wines from the controversial vintage.

This was a treat as First Growths are not popped that much these day. This is coming along nicely, with tobacco, cedar wood, cassis and earthy, forest floor notes continue developing. It's not the most concentrated vintage of Mouton, but it's starting to soften and fill out, while adding complexity and charm. Produced from a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, I'd give it another 5 - 8 years of bottle age and drink it over the following 2 decades.

Close to fully developed, for a First Growth, it is a bit of a disappointment. Medium-bodied, earthy, and showing a good amount of secondary character with its cedar, cigar box, herb, forest floor, spice, and crisp red berries, there is a slight rusticity to the tannins and a general simplicity to the wine on the palate and in the finish. This is unlikely to improve much with age.

2001 Mouton is already showing secondary notes. Smoke, truffle, cassis, burnt leaves and blackberries make up the perfume. With 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% more than Chateau Lafite-Rothschild, this deeply colored, large scaled Pauillac offers aromatics of cassis, mocha, coffee and exotic spices. Very tannic, but lacking the same level of finesse found in the tannins from Chateau Lafite-Rothschild of this same vintage. At least two decades of sleep are required before this wine develops and becomes civilized.

A good, but not great vintage for Mouton Rothschild in a year where they should have shined, as you do not find the weight and density experienced in the top wines of the vintage. Still, there is a lot to like here. There is a ripeness to the tannins and fruit giving you layers of juicy, fresh, creme de cassis, tobacco, earth, spice and cigar box. It is starting to drink well-well now, so if you pop a cork, give it an hour or two of air and it will provide a beautiful night of wine.

From a blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, the wine opens with tobacco, cigar box, crème de cassis, minerality, damp earth, fennel, smoke, and an array spice box aromas. Full bodied and powerful, this Bordeaux wine awards you with a juicy, rich mouthful of fresh, ripe cabernet sauvignon. The long finish ends with a blast of blackberry, spice and black cherry. While already showing well, this special Pauillac wine will gain additional complexity along with more opulent layers of texture with time.

1996 Mouton Rothschild is ripe, rich, powerful and filled with juicy cassis. The fruit shows purity and intensity along with richness. Still young, this will open early for a top vintage of Mouton. It can be enjoyed today, or held for decades.

Classic, firm, old-school, tannic-edged, full-bodied, almost stoic wine, the fruit is bright, crisp and edgy, with savory, herbal nuances, peppery spices, cedar and tobacco to boot. It is not a lot of fun to drink today. If you have the wine and patience, you should give it a decade in the cellar before opening a bottle.

There is a bit more strictness and severity to the wine that is becoming more apparent over the years. The wine has power, loads of tannin, and the fruit is ripe, but the increasing austerity that is an issue with many 1995 Bordeaux wines is something to take note of.

Concentrated, full bodied, youthful and powerful, yet this lacks a refined elegance. With close to 3 hours of decanting, 1995 Mouton Rothschild developed a nose of tobacco, espresso bean, earth, crème de cassis, ash, herbs, spearmint and spicy cherries. Still tannic, this is a big, powerful, refined, but masculine Pauillac. Once the wine started softening, the spicy, boysenberry filled finish fleshed out, becoming a lot more fun to drink. From a blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc, the wine needs at least another decade or more to soften before it's fun to drink. . You can drink this now, but it's still young and on the brawny side.

Ready to drink, the wine is simple, fresh, bright, and on the red fruit side with its strawberry, cherry and cassis personality. The wine is not overly complex and a it’s a little bit lean and green on the palate. This is what my friends from across the pond call a proper, classic luncheon claret.

Medium bodied, bright, and leaning to the austere side of the stye range, there is touch of roughness of to the tannins and some herbal notes, along with a core of earthym spicy, dark cherry and cassis fruit. This is an OK Pauiilac, but not really a great example of Mouton. This is drinking about as good as its going to get. If you have laid some down for birthdays or anniversaries, the wine is not in danger of fading away.

More medium than full-bodied, with a bright, crisp edge to the cassis, cranberry and cherry, there is still a regal touch and nice spicy character to the red fruits. Earth, leaf, tobacco, roasted coffee bean and herbs make their presence known from start to finish along with the sweet and tart piquant red fruits. This is at peak and should be consumed sooner than later.

A bit on the short side, the red fruits have a spicy tart edge which are followed by its savory side of leaves, herbs and tobacco leaf. Medium-bodied, a bit stoic, this is not really worth the money in today's marketplace.

Strict, almost severe, with noticeable green notes interspersed with the cassis, spice, tobacco and cigar characteristics. Fairly disappointing for a First Growth and the vintage.

I'm not sure what happened with this wine in such a strong vintage. Medium bodied, with some rusticity to the tannins, a muted, cassis, earth and tobacco nose and a a fine, but hardly exciting finish. On the bright side, there is no hurry to drink it. But I'm not sure there is a lot reason to buy it either.

A nice wine for sure, but lacking the depth, texture and opulence found in the best vintages. The wine displays secondary characteristics at this stage. It's a nice Bordeaux, but not a great Mouton Rothschild.

Fully mature, with tobacco, herb, forest floor and spicy cassis notes, the wine is light in color, light on the palate and lean in the finish, with fading fruit in the finish. For a First Growth from a great vintage that sells for this much money, the wine was a major disappointment. Drink up as this is only going to get worse with time.

Disappointing for a First Growth. The issue here is the over-riding sensation of greenness on the nose and palate. The spicy cassis is fresh and straddles the line between sweet and tart, and you also find strong notes of cedar and tobacco. But the intensity of the herbal and pepper notes in the finish really stand out. Lovers of those characteristics will enjoy this more than I did.

Coffee, licorice, cedar, cassis, tar, and molasses fill your nose with pleasure. This full bodied wine has nice weight and density as well as good texture. But the black fruit filled finish falls short, especially for a First Growth in a strong vintage. This wine will continue drinking well for at least another decade.

Firm, classic, austere and structured, the tannins have a rustic quality that takes away from the cassis, cedar and tobacco filled character. This is not a poor example of a classic Pauillac, but it's certainly not a wine I'd pour as a great example of a First Growth. My guess is, further aging is not going to add much. At close to 30 years of age, it is, what it is.

Tought, hard, tart and dry, I do not know who gave this wine 100 Pts at one time, or how they came to it, because there is very little, there, there. The wine was dominated by tart red berries, earth, tobacco and dry textures. Perhaps hours of decanting would soften the wine, but it would also lose what little aromatics it has to offer. This is not a wine to seek out at auctions.

The wine is better on the nose than nose than the palate. The fruit is starting to dry out. Firm, fiercely tannic, strict, and young, this bottle remains stubbornly adolescent. Incredibly concentrated, powerful, long and intense, this is a modern-day version of the 1928, which took 50-60 years to come around. Younger consumers with patience should take a good look at this. Provided that youth and patience can get along.

Powerful, firm, concentrated, tannic and deep, this is classic Bordeaux at its best. Not showy, but suggestive, this is a wine of contemplation. It takes time in the glass to unfurl. Complex, but not at forward, with patience and coaxing the wall of fruit opens to leather, soy, spice, tobacco, cedar chest, bright red cherries, cassis and cigar box sensations. Yes, the wine is tannic, but the tannins are ripe, firm, delivering you a stoic, refined, multi-layered experience. Give it 2-3 hours of air, or wait 5-10 years, else gift it to your children, if they are young. I am certain this is going to be one of the 100 year wines.

I am sure old-timers tasting the 1928 in its youth grew tired of waiting for full-maturity and made similar comments to this note. Clearly, all the elements for a great wine are here. Powerful, deep, full-bodied, complex, youthful, energetic and multi-layered, the wine remains stubbornly holding on to its youth. The wall of tannin remains, as does the ocean of fruit, but the tannins are quite present, even with 4 hours of air. Yet, it is impossible not to see that when this hits its stride, it is going to be one of the great vintages of Mouton. But when is that going to happen?

Masculine, powerful and concentrated beyond belief, the wine is stubbornly holding on to its youth, refusing to soften up its wall of tannin. Still, it is impossible not to be overwhelmed by the endless layers of exotically textured, dark, dense fruit. The nose, with its Asian spice, mint, tobacco, cigar box and earthy component is off the hook. And as hard as it is too believe, the experience of the wine on the palate is even better. But it will need another decade to truly come together.

Firm, set in its ways, powerful and tannic, yet, even though it's set in its ways, there is movement here. One of the more youthful bottles I recall tasting, the nose is there, with its cassis, cedar, Asian spice, tobacco and forest floor glory. The wine was made from a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.

Power, purity, refinement and intensity. This incredibly concentrated wine remains the wine of the 1986 Bordeaux vintage. With 4 hours of air, the wine began to open and reveal tobacco, Cuban cigars, truffle, cassis, blackberry and Asian spice notes. Rapidly approaching 30 years of age, this is still an adolescent! While fun to drink now, at maturity, which could come in another 10-15 or 20 years, this is going to be a stunning wine! It’s got it all starting with smoke filled bouquet, complicated with lead pencil, cigar box, spice, dark chocolate, cassis and dark berries. Still tanninc, the tannins are ripe, but there is a light chalky quality feel in the incredibly long, intense, structured finish. The 4 hour decanting was about right.

Smoke, cassis, truffle, brown sugar, lead pencil, cherry blossoms, smoke, Asian spice, caramel and light chocolate with mint create the perfume. Big, powerful, full bodied with dense textures, chalky tannins and the structure to age for several more decades without trouble, there is a lot of intense, spice and cassis meshed with tannins remaining to be resolved. The wine was decanted 4 hours prior to serving. I am not a fan of long decants. But 1986 Mouton Rothschild demanded it. In fact, it continued improving in the glass for the next few hours. Even though the wine is 26 years old, another 5-10 years is required before it begins to show its best.

This is a huge, giant of a wine. There is so much fruit packed into this wine, the bottle seemed to be bulging and the seams straining to hold all the ripe cassis, black fruit and Asian spice in place. This is an amazing wine demanding at least another 15/20 years in the bottle. This might be the most concentrated Bordeaux I have ever experienced. Unfortunately, it remained for the most part tight. A long decant is the way to go for those lacking patience.

Not as deep as I recalled the last time I tasted a bottle. Elegant and refined, with tobacco, cigar box, cedar, cherry and cassis, this is very classy and refined. This is a perfect example of what writers in the 1980's called a wine with breeding. That term, and soon this wine, will have both faded away. The term is already gone, and if you continue waiting, the same thing will happen to this wine. You don't have to finish your bottles today, but there is no reason to wait either.

This Pauillac opens with smoke, toffee, earth, cassis, incense, coffee and Kirsch. In the mouth, it's rich, full bodied and finishes with a regal character and charm coupled with a juicy mouthful of cassis and blackberries. This is probably full mature.

Much better than anticipated, this is a nice Mouton, albeit light and quite green in character with its lean to herbs, forest leaf, cedar and mint. The red fruit is dosed in tobacco leaf in the finish. Probably better 10 years ago, OK, make that 20, if you have a bottle, there is no reason to wait as this is only going to fade with age.

For a First Growth, the elements just don’t quite mesh together. The color was light, with bricking at the edge. Coffee and cassis on the nose. The fruit was decent, the wine had some depth, but it lacked excitement and complexity.

Better on the nose instead of the palate. This wine offered some pleasure, but, it lacked the depth and concentration needed to keep it together. It seemed disjointed and slightly austere in style.

As this is now in its prime time drinking window, well-stored examples of this nectar should begin to escalate in price. And for good reason. Texturally, this opulent, showy, supple, lush wine, which manages to harness an incredible depth of fruit feels just great as it rests on your palate. The finish crosses the sixty-second mark with ease. I suspect well-stored bottles will be even better with another 5 years or so and should remain at their extraordinary level for at least another 2 - 3 decades after that.

I am more than fortunate to be able to taste this gem just about once a year, which allows me to watch its growth over a few decades. Like all great wines, it keeps getting better and better. Opulent, rich, full-bodied, intensely concentrated, flamboyant and attention-seeking, you know this is sublime from the initial whiff. Asian spice, cigar box, smoke, tobacco leaf, red currants, cedar and forest floor aromatics view for your attention. On the palate, the show really gets going. Texturally, this is stunning, there is no other Left Bank wine that feels quite like this. The finish takes off and doesn't let go. This is showing just great today. Yes, it could get a bit better, but you do not need to wait.

When an older bottle of Bordeaux is on, it's on and there is nothing like it. From a perfectly stored bottle, pungent aromas of cedar wood, tobacco, forest floor, leather and exotic spices come through loud and clear. Powerful, yet refined, the tannins are silk and the finish goes on and on, leaving with fresh, ripe fruits that linger.

I've had this wine so many times lately, I should be embarrassed. It's one of the top Left Bank wines from 1982 in Bordeaux, rivaled only by Latour. At 31 years of age, this is still young, yet there is a lot to gained by experiencing the wine. The bouquet, with its smoke, truffle, liqueur, tobacco, cigar box, cassis, blackberry and spice notes are almost worth the price of admission. On the palate, the wine coats your taste receptors with opulently textured ripe berries. There is an exotic sensation to the texture, flavor and fruit that is not sensed in other wines. Truly, this is what great wine is all about.

It's not often you get to compare 1982 Mouton Rothschild with 1982 Latour, but there they were, in the same, amazing flight! The Mouton, with its flamboyant, opulent style was the showier of the pair, but it was not quite at the same level. Still, the stunning nose of Asian spice, smoke, earth, black cherry, forest floor, cigar box and coffee bean grabbed your attention. Rich, powerful and packed with layers of sweet, deep, ripe, juicy dark berries, the wine ended with a long wave of black cherries and spice. Still young, another decade will add a lot to the wine.

Layer after layer of dense, ripe fruit cascades over your palate. The complexity in the flavors and the finesse of the tannins are a pleasure. The wine had color that was as black as ink. Cedar wood, meshed with an exotic spice box note, fresh brewed coffee, licorice and lead pencil notes were all on full display. Very tannic. Huge, dense, corpulent, concentrated layers of fruit took over your palate. This is so concentrated, you could eat it. Some bottles have been more opulent, but this was more concentrated, and backwards. A stunning wine! However, another decade or more of cellaring is warranted. This will probably be drinking well on its 100th birthday.

This is a huge, ostentatious wine. It also demands another 5-10 years of cellaring. This wine has so much potential it's scary! The color was dark, almost opaque. The aromatics which needed much swirling to ferret them out featured exotic spices and a coffee note along with cassis and truffle. The perfume was one of the most complex fragrances offered in any wine I can recall. On the palate the flavors were also rich, deep and intense. The wine had so much weight, it could be described as dense, ending with a fat, opulent, weighty finish that didn't quit. This should begin running on all cylinders around 2015 and last for at least another 30 more years.

Mouton Rothschild light, with more brick than red in the color. Medium bodied, with a brightness to the red berries and cranberry fruits that are accompanied by spicebox, cedar, lead pencil, forest floor and tobacco notes. There is charm without a lot of depth and with the higher levels of acidity creeping in, the wine is on the fading side of life. If you have a few bottles, you should be popping a cork sooner than later on this as it is not going to get better from here.

High tones, medium/full bodied, with more interesting things going on in the nose, with its spice filled, tobacco, cedar, red plum, smoke and leafy aromatics than on the crisp, red berry, sweet and tart palate. No decanting needed, this requires drinking as the fruit is already in a slow state of decline.

Much better on the tobacco, cedar, cigar box, forest floor, leaf, spice and cherry pipe tobacco nose, than on the medium bodied, sightly green, bright, tart and sweet, cherry/cranberry, dusty palate. This is not a wine to hold for further development.

The best part of the wine is the Andy Warhol designed label. Dusty, lean, green and seemingly to have rapidly dropped its remaining fruit, this austere, cranberry and cassis filled, medium-bodied wine is for a First Growth, that sells for a lot of money, frankly not all that interesting.

Tough, rustic, tannic and hard, this is much better on the nose with its tobacco, cigar box, cedar, forest floor and spicy cassis filled aromas. With more tannin than fruit, this was not a lot of fun to taste.

Fully mature, the wine is not entirely secondary, but it's on the way. The cedar wood, tobacco, cigar box, smoke, wet earth, spice, herb and forest floor notes are stronger than the red fruits that remain. There is some length, but that too is starting to fade. Charming for its age, this is not a wine for further cellaring as its best days were clearly yesterday. Pop and pour, decanting would hurt and not help this wine.

Tough, hard, dry, tannic and austere in style, the nose is much better, with its mature, secondary aromatics than the palate, which is where the wine falls apart. Drink up. This is never going to get better.

If you’re a fan of old wines, lacking fruit, bristling with his acidity, austere style and lots of earthy, tobacco notes, this is for you. Else, I’d pass on this wine. It continues to decline.

Fully mature, the cassis and coffee scented wine offers a nice, but simple, brawny, old school mouth of Cabernet. There is no reason to hold this wine as it will not improve.

Not much fruit remaining here. The nose and palate are more focused on the tobacco, earthy, smoke and wet forest side of the style range. There is a rustic leaning to the tannins as well. This is past its prime and requires drinking sooner than later.

Produced when Bordeaux was in the middle of its missing decade, or decade and a half, depending on your point of view, the aroma was much more interesting than the palate, with its cedar chest, cassis, leaf, earth, cigar box and cassis, fully mature, with some rusticity to the tannins and touch of green in the finish, this requires consumption.

I’ve wanted to taste the wine for years, especially after the stunning bottle of 1962 Latour tasted last year. How would it measure up, against that giant? It was close, but… Light in color, the nose delivered cigar box, sweet jammy berries, spice, forest floor and cherry notes. Medium/full bodied, the fruit, while exotic in texture was starting to fade. Still, it was quite nice for a 51 year old wine. That being said, I would not hold it any longer.

Cassis, cedar, cigar ash, lead pencil, mint and hints of rich, ripe, black cherry and leather make up the complex perfume. The wine is concentrated and powerful. In the finish it shows an austere, steely, traditional personality with a minor hint of greenness in the finish.

I cannot believe I was lucky enough to taste this two years in a row! Each bottle has consistently shown incredibly well. Concentrated, full-bodied, deep, and intense, there is still plenty of power here, along with a nose packed with mint leaves, tobacco, Asian spice, wet earth, cigar smoke, and red currants. Texturally, there is a flamboyant edge to the red fruits that you cannot seem to get enough of. This is clearly what great wine is all about!

Clearly one of the great wines of my life, this is stunning in every sense of the word. The nose, with its array of spices, mint, tobacco leaf, cherry currant, cedar and forest floor lets you know this is special. But the star of the show is the flamboyant, opulent, lush palate that delivers waves of spicy, earthy, dark and bright red fruits that do not know when to quit. The wine is effortless to drink. Fully mature, this is a thrill a sip bottle.

This is why you lay down the best wines. This is surreal. It is hard to decide where to start. Is it the nose, with its Asian spice, mint, cedar, Cuban cigar, ashtray or cassis scents? Or do you focus on the incredible depth of flavor, layers of fruit, ripe, flamboyant, showy textures, or is it the length that exceeds 60 seconds? Clearly a candidate for wine of the wine, this is what great aged Bordeaux is all about.

Each time I taste one of the great 1961 Bordeaux wines, I always think it could be the last time I am able to savor one of these historic beauties. There is so much power and concentration here, the wine feels weighty and intense. The nose is haunting with its tines of mint, tobacco, cigar wrapper, (Cuban of course) thyme, leaf and spice accents. The fruit has an earthyness that really comes through, and the finish just lingers on your palate.

Does the term heart-stopping express my thoughts on this stunning bottle of wine? Seamless, flawless and utterly compelling, this is what great wine is all about. OMG... That's short for "Oh My God", if you're not used to reading my notes. This exotic, erotic, kinky wine knocks you out with its Asian spice, tobacco leaf, cassis, spice, coffee bean, cigar ash, black cherry liqueur infused perfume. Dense, thick and concentrated with ripe, pure fruit, the wine coats our mouth, palate and senses with flavor and layers of opulent textures that only the patina of age can deliver. This is about as good as a wine can get. What a treat. And the scary thing is, well stored examples can continue to develop additional levels of complexity. There are wines you taste, and wines you remember tasting, where you were when you tasted it, and who you tasted the wine with. I will not forget the entire experience of this stunning wine.

This not yet fully mature legend was one of the better bottles of wine I have ever tasted. I am patiently waiting, hoping and praying my 82 and 86 turn out this good

Tasting from bottles that are close to 6 decades old are often fraught with disappointment. Think about it. That's a long time for most wines to live in a bottle. But when the bottle delivers as promised, that is the experience wine lovers who cellar select bottles for years covet. This example of 1955 Mouton Rothschild delivered what was needed, and then some. Coffee, cedar chest, earth, truffle, Cuban cigar smoke, Asian spice, cassis and forest floor aromas kicked off the exotic fireworks. Plush, with the patina of age, this sensuous, round, concentrated wine offered a finish that must have remained on my palate for at least 60 seconds. I'll never know what 1982 or 1986, let alone later vintages of Mouton will taste like at 60 years of age, but I imagine they will be even better.

This amazing Bordeaux was light garnet with brick and deep amber hues in color. This wine could open its own perfume shop with its intense bouquet. Leather, soy, Asian spice, wood, truffle, cassis, cigar and incense filled your glass, olfactory senses and the room. The patina of age gave this wine an unbelievable texture. The fruit displayed an incredible silky, velvet richness on your palate. The opulent, flamboyant, decadent sensations that drenched your palate would excite the most jaded wine lover. The long, complex, seamless finish flowed over every inch of your mouth. I would never have thought this wine was 64 years old. In fact, I hope I'm in that good a shape and that someone will still need me and feed me, "When I'm 64". Part of the reason the wine is so concentrated is, it was produced from incredibly low yields of 10 hectoliters per hectare. Also, much of the wine came from the estates oldest vines, as the vineyards were allowed to lapse during the war. Not much wine was made. In fact, the production was only slightly more than 6,000 cases, 1475 magnums and 24 jeroboams.

In the glass, it resembles golden rubies. Truffles, cedar, tobacco, wet earth, soy, cigar store, fresh picked cherries, mint and smoke aromatics popped from the glass. This deep wine majors in decadence and minors in hedonism. Or is it the other way around? The texture melds opulence with lush, sensuous sensations that coats your palate with silk and a mélange of velvety ripe cherries.. If 28 is the ancient version of 86, the 29 has to be the mature example of 82! I loved this decadent treat which got better in the glass.

A perfect expression of my favorite old vintage of Bordeaux. I have high hopes 82, 90, 00 & the best 03 will be this good when they 80 years. This wine showed why Bordeaux is the worlds most collectible wine while offering a perfect illustration on why we need to allow our wines to reach maturity. The palate was liquid silk and velvet that was painted with patina of history which added incredible layers of aged richness to the experience. Old, mature lushness is much more sensuous than anything offered by younger wines. Decanting cannot offer this. Only decades in the bottle allow the best wines to reach this pinnacle. Aromatically, the wine is also off the charts. Incredible levels of exotic, Asian spice, soy, leather, coffee and the best white truffles say hello to your nose and keep on talking. The 80 year old finish is an orgasmic experience.

Sporting a color as dark as many 60’s wines, this was impressive as it was poured from the bottle! Coffee, mint, forest floor, fresh herbs, tobacco, ash and black fruit said hello to your nose. In the mouth, you were treated to powerful sensations of steely black fruit. The wines personality remained powerful, brawny and austere. This is a masculine style of wine that my guess is, is a harbinger of the 1986. I liked the wine on the nose better than on the palate.

Very light red in color, Asian spice, truffles, tobacco, leather and caramel scents were easy to find. Elegant, opulent, soft and refined on the palate. This rhubarb flavored wine came with an intriguing sensation of cold steel. Slightly short in the finish with hints of red fruit and citrus, this was a very nice wine and treat because it will probably be the last time I experience a wine from 1925.
